still i7-3960x still only PCI-Express 2.0 that's why it never goes up to 3.0 u want it to, than u need to wait for Ivy Bridge or something for LGA2011 ^^

but u got ur answer earlier i see.

Could this just be a reporting error by GPU-Z? try another app that reports Gfx card stats to see if it gives the same info..... CPU-Z????

I assume that you have the latest Bios 1101 from January 2012? The specs for the board on the Asus site state that you MUST have this Bios for full PCI-E 3.0 functionality.....

http://uk.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_2011/Rampage_IV_Extreme/#download

My bios is 1101 but as you can seen on CPU-Z its from 12/30/2011.

And asus says ;

Rampage IV Extreme 1005 BIOS
1. Enhance PCIe 3.0 Support Capability.
2. Enhance DRAM Compatibility.
3. Enhance CPU OC capability.
4. Enable VT-d support for VT-d enabled processor.
5. Speed up S3 resume time

So which bios version i should select ? 1005 or 1101. I didnt understand exactly :(

thanks for helping :)

Well as it's not working I would try the Jan 2012 that I linked, this is the one that is linked from the product spec page that says that it's needed for full compatibility, I agree it's confusing with the numbering but I really do think this might be your answer.... and providing you get the flash right there is little to lose TBH.

Does a PCI-E 2.0 card also get thrown down to x8? Do you have a card you could test that with because it would explain if the lanes are simply not being used.

Sandy Bridge processors LGA1155/2011 don't have PCI-Express 3.0 controller only 2.0 so u need a Ivy Bridge processor to get PCI-Express 3.0 controller ^^

Um, no.

SB-E supports PCIe 3.0(says so right on the Intel site). It's just not certified by PCI-SIG, so they do not say PCIe 3.0...but they do say it supports PCIe 3.0 SPEEDS.

Not to mention the 3.0 part isn't the issue, it is the number of lanes the card is using.

I'd reseat the card and make sure it is really in there good and tight. Also, try laying the rig on its side, window side up, to see if the card sagging is causing a bad connection with the slot.

Did you try setting your PCIe x16 lane switch to disable all but the first PCIe slot that you're using. I'm wondering if the board doesn't automatically do it and you have to do it yourself. Maybe change the switch to on, off, off, off from beginning to end?

when i look at Intel's side for the i7-3960x i get this:

PCI Express Revision 2.0
DMI 5 GT/s

here: http://ark.intel.com/products/63696...rocessor-Extreme-Edition-(15M-Cache-3_30-GHz)

so maybe i am wrong i dunno but still o_O

Yeah, I understand the confusion. Like I said, the CPUs are capable of PCIe 3.0 speeds, and I linked the intel whitepaper saying so. However, for whatever reason, these CPUs did not meet PCI-SIG certifiction requirements, so technically, we are both right here. What i can say is that I personally have a 3960X, and X79 boards, and i know, for sure, that these chips support PCIe 3.0 with the right BIOS.

Board makers are working with BIOSes to ensure proper support for PCIe 3.0 devices, but not all devices may work properly. In fact, the issue the OP is relating could simply be due to a problem with other hardware present on the board, and might have nothing to do with the CPU at all. It could simply be the card, even.

However, the point has been made that the card should, in any circumstance, swap down to PCIe 2.0 with a x16 link, but is not. For some reason it is only using 8 lanes. This could be due to the board's BIOS enacting this mode for compatibility reasons, it could just be problems with the switches on the board, or it could be the card itself.

Frankly I don't really think anyone here is really qualified to answer what is going on, myself included. We have some really good suggestions, but so far, none of them has helped the OP resolve the situation. I review motherboards, so I really try to keep up to date on this sort of stuff, and I'm out of suggestions.

The best thing for him to do, is to go to the ASUS ROG forum, and relate this issue there. If the problem is board-related, then at least ASUS would be made aware, and can fix the issue via a BIOS update, or something if this is a real issue, but without their involvement, I'm afraid this issue will not be resolved.

i think some mechanism prefers x8 3.0 over x16 2.0 because it leaves more pcie lanes open for other stuff

Like what though? There are 40 lanes from CPU(x16/x16/x8), and 8 from the PCH for other stuff.

The board has 5 slots. top is red, x16 from CPU, and splits to x8 with the second red slot.

third red slot is x16, splits to x8 with the black slot above it.

Fourth red slot is x8, from CPU.

That leaves the 8 x1 links from PCH for everything else.

The board uses Asmedia ASM1480 bridge chips, which should work for PCIe 3.0.

It could be intentional BIOS control when PCIe 3.0 card is installed, I suppose, but in such a config, there is no real reason to do so, unless for compatibility, IMHO, or else the second red slot down would be fubarred too.

Of course, I didn't get one of these boards, so I cannot really check and be sure.

my guess is, since you are only getting 8x, that some of the lanes are disconnected, and its reverted to 8x. most like since that card is sagging like crazy. could also be something as simple as a spec of dust combined with the sag.

that mechanism probably doesnt know about total lane count because it doesn't know the rest of the hardware. so it prefers the better solution which is 3.0 x8

Weird situation, for sure, and definitely not what i expected, or the OP. The board advertizes that it has dual x16 PCIe 3.0 slots. If this is normal behavior, those slots should be listed differently in the specifications, and the grey/black slot is(listed as x8 mode).

In the end, I guess not too too surprising, considering PCIe 3.0 support isn't exactly "guaranteed" on SB-E chips.
