Hi there. Your card is NOT a terrible overclocker. My cards cant do 880mhz on stock voltage.
U should b stoked. :)

Does this mean that all 6xxx series are better than the 5870 eyefinity six?
You can get a 6570 at BestBuy for $100.

A lot of time company changed the numbering for marketing purpose.
"Better" is subjective unless there is emperical numbers to support it.

I'm in the process of migration our company development to using GPGPU.
Both from personal usage to company usage; it can't just be better because it's different design.

Thanks for all the input,

Doesnt quite work work like that....

a 5870 is close to the performance of a 6950 but the 6950 edges ahead ever so slightly - Crossfire Scaling & tesselation

so yes a 6950 is better then a 5870, If you talk about a 6570 then yes it would be better compared to other cards within the same low/mid range and not directly against the 5870 which is still pretty hi-end.

Thanks for all the input,

It can otherwise progress would just stop. Designs become more efficient not just power wise but also the way they use that power. AMD totally redesigned the entire backend of their cards, which includes all the shader units and how they work.

Everything can be better because its a different design. the only difference is if its a WINNING design.

Hey there guys, GOOD NEWS!! Since i started this thread, im going to address my original issue. Just got the HAF X Case, and oh my god. Card dropped like.... 15-20 degrees. Here are a few pic.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b94/Dolphian/IMAG0115.jpg

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b94/Dolphian/IMAG0113.jpg

Card idols at 39.5 and now load at 57 degrees C. So i was able to up the voltage to 1.2v, and reach a stable 925/1440 Overclock :), Achieved another 325 points in 3dmark 11, with idol at 42, load at 78 degress C. This is still, being .... UNBELIEVABLY bottlenecked by my current CPU: e6400 @2.933ghz.

All in all - more pleased than i originally was :)

Sounds about right. I have mine on water and can do 900/1400 at 1.175v, and 938/1453 at 1.210v. I can do higher for benching, but these are probably more than enough for gaming.

Seems this card varies quite a bit in OC capability from model to model. I know some do much better than mine, but so far the card is still powerful enough to play any game at 1900x1200. So I'm happy too. :D

So it WAS temps?

:rockout:

Yes, yes it was :). I can imagine watercooling getting to 1k core. I will push it what it will go to tonight, this was early this morning before work i tried the oc's with 20 min~ of Heaven Benchmark for stability, along with alittle furmark and 3dmark 11, got another 350+ on 3d mark from my previous oc, over 500 from stock. Very pleased, i will still be getting kepler most likely when it comes out but, these cards have the potential to be still one of the best price/performance with proper overclocking. I didn't realise how bad my CM690 II was for air cooling...

You could probably push 1k core with slightly more voltage if you dont mind cranking the fans to 100% to handle the temperatures.

Hm, how much more tmep increase would an x increase i expect to see with 1.2v -> 1.x. What would the V need to be to achieve a 1k core? Also, what memory should i aim for. Its currently at (950/1475) @ 1.2v

See this is way more inline with my experience overclocking an unlocked 6950. It took more than 1100mv to hit 880, but all the stuff being posted online at the time suggested I should be getting 950 at that voltage. I really don't get all those people who had zero problems flashing to a 6970 because that should have been an insufficient vcore boost.

True, im not sure if those people just dont post their voltages, or just try to state that they got those frequencies and casually left out that they put antoher .1 volts on it. W/e, im happy with 950/1475 stable 1.2v stable.

925/1440 @ 1.2? thats strange man.. i was getting that at 1.1... getting 960/1500 every day of the week now at 1.16V... not trying to show off or anything, just stating my experiences. :)

Wish my 2500k was that good of an overclocker though...

What games have you tested your OC in?

I have tested in BF3, BC2, Heroes of Newerth (which is suprisingly what i did mostly blue screen in), and a little bit of RIFT. I ran heaven benchmark 3 screens for probably 30 min.

Hollyy crap! Thats insane, maybe my tests weren't properly picked out then? I can revisit my OC's today and see what i can get. Although, i should have an MSI GTX 680 in the mail monday or tuesday night :).

Hi guys, sorry for off-topic, but I have problem with OCCT 4.2.0. It crashes every time when I start a DX10 gpu test on my HD6950. Could anyone test this, if this a general issue with HD6900 series cards?

BTW. results of my overclocking is in my system specs <- (880mhz@1.075V)

Dolph, you bought a 680 when you're still running an E6400?? Heck man you need to upgrade that CPU otherwise you got an even crazier bottleneck on your hands! I doubt you'll see any improvement going from the 6950 to the 680 in games while you still run that dual core!

But congrats on sorting the cooling and overclock on your GPU in the end :toast:

dhdude: It depends on what display you have, I have a 30" display with 2560x1600, E6300@3.26GHz and HD6950, and I'm most of the time bottlenecked by graphics card.

My HD6950 also doesn't like to be clocked at all. It's factory OC'ed at 850/1300. If i OC anything for just 10MHz it will lockup in games for few seconds till GPU gets reset and then it works again for a while until it happens again. I've tried slightly increasing core voltage and nothing changed. I've never had any gfc card being so damn stiff for OC'ing. But oh well, at least its fast out of the box.

Don't matter dude, a cpu should be #1 on your list, well before a new gpu.
