I have a strange problem, pissing me off especially when I try to play BF2142. My mouse randomly freezes, sometimes every 5 minutes, sometimes 5 times a minute. Also it freezes for 2 minutes sometimes, and for 2 seconds other times..... WTF!! I plugged in a standard PS2 mouse and that one works great ALL the time, but the USB mouse keeps doin this crap for a week now. I've done a few virus scans but nothing. Any ideas?

Im guessing there is nothing wireless about this? try a different USB plug and make sure that your on a nice flat surface. Also make sure the laser on the bottom of the mouse is clear. (UNLESS your using a ball mouse..lol..make sure thats all clean) What kind of mouse is it anyways, might just be cheap and unable to work well with the surface its used on.
Do you use a mouse pad.

Kinda need more info I guess lol.

It's a dell usb mouse, with the cord, not wireless. It works great when it's working, no read problems. And when it freezes, the buttons quit working as well. While it's frozen the red lazer is just lit like usual, not brighter like when you lift it away from the desk. I think the usb port is getting put on hold or something, maybe a port priority thing?

My old Usb mouse used to do this.. it got progressively worse and worse, until it finally just died. Gave me a good reason to get a G5. :)

how much other usb devices are plugged in? i understand you get so much bandwidth for each usb port but as people somtimes use one usb port up for a extension usb port say with 4 usbs on it you might be using up too much bandwidth people with usb sound cards that switch from 16bit to 24 bit audio might know what i mean as u get a band width message come up somtimes when switching to 24 bit if you have too many usb devices running.

ok, today I thought it was fixed after playing in the bios settings to fix some other strange problem- but the problem is still here. NOW what it does is this: works fine during online gameplay in BF2142. It freezes when I open outlook for about 30-40 seconds. I have done virus scans and scanned for spyware, but nothing shows up.

when a mouse goes bonkers like this... it is usually because it is failing. I have had 2 failures over the last 5 years. One was a Swann optical mouse, the other was a Razor Copperhead.

Save yourself a lot of time. Buy a new mouse. I spent HOURS if not DAYS trying to fix the same problem. Tried everything. But the probelm went away 100% with a new mouse.

why would the mouse only fail when opening outlook to check email, and in fact it only fails after clicking the send/receive button?

Perhaps someone has installed a keylogger on your PC while you weren't looking... :)

Trying another mouse is a very easy task. It's worth trying... and ruling out. It's a common problem.

I know your kidding but at the same time while you brought up the idea, how do keyloggers work? I always wondered.

Best way to find out how they work... is to download it and install it... see how it works and read the instructions. Two to try are

007
Ghost keylogger

Both work in different ways... and will give you an insight into what they do and how they do it.

put a PS2 adapter on the mouse and see if problem goes away , if not its a bad mouse , if that does clear it up then usb issue ! PS2 adapter = usb one end and old fashion mouse connect on other end:toast:

Running ANY background trayicon apps that MIGHT be "pounding on the system hard"?

(They can cause stuff like that, in games especially)

Doubt this, because you mention a PS/2 mouse runs fine, but... something to check anyhow imo, if others' ideas fail in hardware/driver stuff!

Listen to DRDNA. It's the mouse. Or a faulty USB chip on your mainboard.
