Well that borders on false advertising... :nutkick:

No wonder mostanufacturers won't offer lifetime warranty on any of their products, well I'm glad you were able to fix your card, my 580s are still rocking and havent gave me any trouble... yet, I'll stay away from PNY from now on, thanks for the heads up.

Agreed, but When I pointed that out they quoted to me their terms and conditions that applied to their "lifetime warranty" and made it clear to me that when a product was discontinued, it was no longer covered under any warranty. When I pointed out the card was less than a year old and their basic warranty was a 1 year they simply didn't care. But the card was only a few WEEKs old and newegg instead sorted it out.

Bottom line was they produced a card with a poorly designed heatsink and then when they all started dieing they discontinued that series and introduced a replacement series with a new heatstrink design.

But anyway, I agree that the gtx 580 still has a lot of life left in it. Power consumption is not over the top, performance largely keeps pace with the 7950. I wouldn't say it's as fast, but it's in the same class. I'd say the gtx 580 is to the 7950 what the gtx 570 is to the 580 - most of the performance most of the time. I really hate to see them go, really was one of the great gpus.

Great card, I'll be keeping mine for probably 2 more years or so unless the GTX680 suddenly dives in prices.

oh PNY in particular were very clear with me that "life time warranty" meant the life time of the product, and that if it was no longer produced, it was no longer covered. Back in the days of the FX series I had it out with them over an FX 5200 Ultra that they produced for about 8 months and then discontinued to produce a different version with a new heatsink. When the fan on mine died I kindly asked them to replace it for me. They insisted that because they no longer produced the card they had no obligation to cover the warranty, despite the fact that they now had a replacement version they could send me. Luckily I was able to swap it out under Newegg's return policy (under 30 days) but when the replacement died I just swapped the fan for an aftermarket HSF. Never bought PNY since.

However Their Warranty doesnt state they will replace the board with a similar performing part if the existing part is no longer produced, Youd have to go with another card maker.

Several Others state they will do such above

At least now we will start to see reasonable 28nm prices.
This news doesn't mean that at all… more just the opposite, no other good Nvidia alternatives in the market place means the GTX680 will be it. Limiting choice doesn't equate to lower pricing.

yay for upcoming clearance prices :D
I would say they won't be any much lower, and actually could go higher if Nvidia has limited number in the pipe. Many AIB will store away the last to cover those warranties. I believe the best point for GTX580 deals was just before the GTX680 showed and everybody thought there would be $500 card for all... now we know that wasn't the case.

Not really, for one if nv lowered 580gtx prices at 7970 launch (for competition) 7970 would be cheaper, 680gtx too.

Now that 580gtx is out of the picture prices will start to drop. AMD already lowered it a bit, nv will have to follow..

At least that's my pov and usually im quite right :p

Not sure what you meant. Here in the States when 7970’s really showed in January the GTX 580 from quality AIB’s (not PNY/Galaxy stuff) was holding to well above $425 with healthy rebates. There wasn’t any real leverage place upon the GTX 580 until end of February. Although, it was March when Nvidia probably told AIB’s the GTX 680 price and performance would be about. AIB’s knew they couldn’t sell GTX 580 >$400 without pissing off buyers in 3 weeks so the price drop to like $350 right away but with even more huge rebates. Sinking to a low $330 –AR$60 for the Gigabyte GV-N580UD-15I from Egg on 3/31.

Why is it so confusing? If this 580gtx 350$ price happened at 7970 launch, then AMD wouldn't sell 7970 at 550$.. Imo more like 450$ max. Same with 680gtx it would be max 400-450$.

But now it is what it is..

If this 580gtx 350$ price happened at 7970 launch, then

They would NOT be the Nvidia.... I know Nvidia they don't reduce price on a little competetion or "one up's mans' ship" at that stage in the game...

The last time they chrashed price was on a GTX260 when 4870 showed 3 weeks later for like 40% and thaen AIB where sending guy's checks... this wasn't going to be like that?

I think that fight can't happen with TSMC's 28Nm garnering most every bit of the blame (as normal).

I think once the more mainstream Nvidia's get into the market (mid-end of May) things won't improve in price. Honestly that probably won't bring a ton of price/perf satisfaction vs. say OC GTX560Ti 448 core bought right today. I'm seeing the GTX560 448 as the card to get... at $220 (keep your eyes open). I mean close to GTX570 punch and at that price it has merit.

If you consider a new GTX670 will better the 580, while I don't think reference it will encroach on the 7970 and cost for at least 2-3 mo's hang at $400+. I mean provide a Kepler that's close to 7970 at $400; that would just cannibalize GTX680 sales. Their AIB’s aren’t going to like that after they put engineering/money into all thier customs and have yet to recoup. Now it's the GTX660 being at $300+; just as the GTX460 it will be the "attack dog" and will really provide GK104 prowess vying the 7870 OC's that will be $350. That's what I see a GTX660 will be better than the 448Core, but say... $100 better while needing to wait 5 weeks?

I see holding out for 28Nm parts will be as disillusioning for the Green camp as it is for the Red, and honestly not worth holding your breath for. This time neither side is immune to TSMC.

Well i already own a OC'ed 570gtx that matches 580gtx at ~ 870mhz, so from my perspective this 680gtx /7970 aint worth it, if i would want to upgrade then i would go for something that's at least 1x faster like high-end kepler GK110 or AMD's Tenerife?, not ~ 20-30% once maxed..

And that's why i said if NV lowered 580gtx price at 7970 launch, AMD would have to price it more aggressively like now atm.
NV's 680gtx would be cheaper too, i mean at first it was scheduled for 300-350$.

Yeah i saw some rumors its TSMC that "screwed up" again, thus higher prices.. But idki would take that with a pinch of salt lol :D

Anyhow it doesnt matter anymore, hopefully that real high-end (Nv GK110?, AMD GCN2 - Tenerife) delivers, it better! :)

NV GK110 and AMD Tenerife? aren't suppose to be dual gpus, but more like that next high-end single gpu.

Imo we should have had them now instead of these 680gtx & 7970 "high-ends" and this is my only issue about them, they failed to deliver compared to last gen high-end. Guess im to spoiled, but usually i want 1x faster gpu and not only 10-20fps more :D

anyway sry for off topic.

The higher price isn't rumor... this shrink basically didn't provide the lower price we normally enjoy. As to the rest of it... if its'... not great news on TSMC it's probably not far South of being right.
