techPowerUp! has already reported on NVIDIA's 8900GTX, which is essentially an overclocked version of the G80 with 25% more shaders unlocked, but NVIDIA is also planning a dual-GPU card, the 8950GX2, as well as a GTS version and budget GT and GS models. Because there are so many details, here's a list:
  • 8950 GX2 - this will have two cores working at 550MHz with 96 shaders on each chip, and two sets of 512MB 256-bit GDDR4 memory at 2000MHz and a predicted price of $600.
  • 8900 GTX - this is now being reported to run at 700MHz with 128 shaders and 768MB of 384-bit memory running at 2200MHz, priced around $550
  • 8900 GTS - this version will be similar to the GTX, with 128 shaders but a lower GPU speed of 600MHz and 640MB of 320-bit memory running at 2000MHz. The price should be around $500
  • 8900 GT - this will have 96 shaders and a 600MHz core, with 512MB of 256-bit GDDR3 memory running at 1800MHz, priced around $400
  • 8900 GS - this should have a core clocked at 550MHz with 96 shaders and 256-bit memory at 1600MHz in sizes of either 256MB or 512MB. This should cost about $250
All five of these cards will use an 80nm manufacturing process and could push down the price of the 8800GTX to $450 and the 8800GTS to $400.

nice offerings but the prices are too damn high. I thought the 8900 GTX was supposed to have 160 shaders instead of 128?

Thats what I was going to say, you might as well replace the ATI logo with the Nvidia one. The specs on the boards are almost identical, the prices are also interchangable, wasn't someone doing some investigating on these two companies for price fixing recently ?

If you want the best you have to pay for it, there are a lot of people out there spending $600 on a graphics card, it isn't something most people do, but it does happen. They aren't going to release these at extremely cheap prices, you aren't going to get a top of the line card for $100, it just isn't going to happen. I still remember buying my 9800Pro 256MB for $450 the week it came out, and that was 4 years ago. Just like everything else in the world, prices on graphics cards have continued to rise. $600 for a graphics card today is not extortionate. When you have people paying $1200 for a CPU, $400 for a motherboard, and $300 for a hard drive, $600 for a graphics card isn't extreme by any means, it actually fits right in there.

totally agree , u pay for technology , and that isnt cheap ................. thats why a Honda is a Honda and a Porche is Porche.

GOOD NEWS: NVidia fan/user here (I like OpenGL games & NVidia tends to do best on it)

[*]8900 GTS - this version will be similar to the GTX, with 128 shaders but a lower GPU speed of 600MHz and 640MB of 320-bit memory running at 2000MHz. The price should be around $500

Man... that's the card I want for my next rig!

:)

(BUT, 2009 (time of my next ALL COMPLETELY NEW TECH SYSTEM I WILL PURCHASE, & NOT BEFORE) is a long ways away...)

* Better stuff may come from them in that period, in fact, I'd wager strongly on that account, by that time especially!

All five of these cards will use an 80nm manufacturing process and could push down the price of the 8800GTX to $450 and the 8800GTS to $400.

Ah... now, THAT'S the part that interests me - occasionally, I will update/upgrade over the videocard I have in a rig @ present!

(The vidcard's usually about the ONLY thing I am 'weak about' as far as 'upgrading', & mainly because I like to game as much as the next guy & face it: With today's games, especially @ HIGHER resolutions use? I think you get "more of a bang for the buck" outta the vidcard than you do say, performing a CPU + Memory upgrade... for the MOST part!)

Usually, once I pop a machine together, it's RARE for me to upgrade any other parts! I spent years in what I call the "upgrade trap", upgrading EVERY LITTLE THING (nice machines did result, but once they became antiquated, I realized that what I spent upgrading them would have bought me an ENTIRELY new state-of-the-art rig)!

Plus, imo, once busses or CPU sockets change, you're stuck in a dead-end street really...

IMO @ least, you're better off, if you can afford it that is, to go w/ the newest busses & sockets (plus more of course) + go "ALL OUT", every few years...

After all: New stuff? It's usually a GOOD DEAL FASTER & have futures for a few years @ least typically!

Vidcards though? Yea... I'll update them, IF the price is right & the extra performance is there & I mean REALLY there (like 50% or better over what I have currently).

Simply because increases do result vidcard-to-vidcard updates most times from NVidia & pretty substantial ones!

(E.G.-> The 7900 GTX OC I have IS outpaced by the 8800 series, & by a GOOD margin already, & this new board releasing will drive the 8800 series down, & give me an excuse to update THIS machine (not a future one) w/ the 8800 series vs. the 7900 GTX OC I have in it now... GOOD news, imo @ least!)
