New to RAID - looking to store photo's and design work.

I am thinking I need a RAID 1? This would store digital photo's and design work my wife has done. Right now I have all my photo's on a 320Gb internal and her work on a 500Gb external, I would like to secure it from loss better with a RAID setup. Am I correct in selecting a RAID 1 setup? Do any drives perform better than others in RAID (SATA III) ?

This will be installed on my PC in the system specs and accessed by her laptop on the network.

*After reading some blogs and forums people are saying to maintain at least 3 copies of data and raid is not really a good option, external drives are the preferred method.

Any help is appreciated.

Just playing devils' advocate; there is no sure fire way of securing from loss. Serious note, how many drives?

I understand that and thinking more about how to successfully store the data makes me think, I should just backup every month or two on multiple drives with at least 1 external stored at another location (parents or friends).

Probably talking 3 drives total.

Raid 5. Gives you some of the performance from raid 0 with parity of raid 1. 2 disks would have to fail at the same time to lose all data.

Super important data just backup to the external.

Depending on the amount of data, cloud storage is a good way to secure things "off site". But any more than ~5 to 7GB of data and you'll be paying for it.

RAID1 is a disk mirror set: two disks mirror eachother. One drive can fail without losing your data.
RAID5 is a disk parity set: multiple drives are striped together, and any one drive can fail without losing your data.
RAID6 is a disk parity set in the same way as RAID5, but can allow for two disks to fail without losing your data.

The reality is, a large power surge, a simply bad batch of drives, or a physical catastrophe (fire, flood, earthquake, zombies) can also take your data away.

I have a home server with a RAID6 set for data, two RAID 1 sets for OS, Apps and Virtual Machines, and 25GB of cloud storage with Microsoft's Skydrive for storing things that I really would like to survive SoCal's next apocalyptic event

Do like JR said. If you have three disk take two that are the same size and they will be your raid 0 and the third will be the raid one. That way things are at least backed up.
