But performs hughely better for 33% less price, although if you have a windowed case at eye level and prefer Alfa Romeo cars over Lexus, Audi, MB and jag then I am with you all the way :rockout:

This is clearly a reason to invest in a 3820. The extra money you save from going to the 3820 from 3770k can go towards the X79 motherboard. Now you have quad-channel memory and 40-lanes of PCI-E 3.0 for the same price as a 3770k and a good Z77 board.

At least on NewEgg in the USA, the Asus Sabertooth z77 is 50 USD less than the X79 Sabertooth, but the 3820 is 50 USD cheaper than the 3770k. So depending on the board, the prices equal out.

I have a Saab 9-5 Aero myself, but I would love a BMW. :)

That's terrible advice. The 3770k beats the 3820 in literally everything while using less power to do it. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/551?vs=523

OK, fair enough, then invest £5 on pretty heat spreaders then you get the looks and the performance still for a lot less..... problem solved :D

If the 3770k has only gone up by a tenner or so, then it looks to me like it's just normal market price fluctuations and it should go down again.

It's not a hands down win, performance is similar and just because the 3820's full power usage is higher doesn't mean it is a bad CPU. It's idle usage is actually about the same if not lower than the 3770k, and keep in mind few games tax high-end CPUs 100%. Also you wouldn't just get a 3820 because it's faster. The platform is more capable, has more avenues for future upgrades, and honestly it runs just as well and if you choose to do crossfire at least you have plenty of PCI-E lanes to use.

Saying it is "terrible advice" is a little extreme. I think both platforms will work well until you want to upgrade your CPU, add more GPUs, or need more ram. I think X79 has more longevity than SB or IVB.
