What is the performance difference between a Athlon 4400+ X2 with 2MB cache @ 2.2 GHZ and an Opteron 2.2 GHZ 2 MB cache X2? I found one of each except the athlon is $40 less and has a HUGE fan included...

I don't know if there is any difference that warrants $40. I would go with the 4400 honestly.

Opterons are more stable because they are server chips.

The operteron will overclock much better than the 4400+, but thats about it.

im not sure which opteron your comparing it to, but when comparing a AMD 3700+ san diego core to a opteron 148, the opteron kicks its arse badly

Opty's can support 8 dimms of memory (vs 4 with athlons), have mutli-HT (vs single), can have multiple cpus...etc...

over all in regards to the 939 socket...they are same thing.

due to the opty is a server class cpu, they have better ceramics, to give them a low temperature...(in a server racked room, temps mater). Plus the optys share a common core with the FX series...so the opterons have potential.

I get the feeling that the Opteron is under clocked so that when it's under heavy load it will cruise with no problems. If I go that route then I can overclock slightly and it will start to reach the same temps as a stock Athlon. I like that idea better, my office isn't hot now, but less heat is usually less wasted energy.
