3.5GB of RAM in XP 32 to 2GB in Win 7 64-bit?

I switched a week ago from XP 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit. But I've run into a problem that apparently affects numerous people, which is while XP recognized 3.5GB, 7 will only recognize 2, despite being 64-bit. I've tried numerous configurations, and the mobo only has 2 slots, so it wasn't particularly difficult to test. Either piece of RAM in either slot will be recognized and the computer starts fine. But a stick in both slots, will stop at 2048MB. I even had someone look at it, and managed to make it recognize all 4GB for almost 2 days, but it stopped working last night when I reconnected the power supply cables to the motherboard for a different problem. msconfig has max memory unchecked, but every time the computer starts, it only reports 2048MB, same with system properties, only showing 2.0 GB. I've looked through the BIOS as well, and I'm not finding any option to reallocate memory. I don't want to update the BIOS, because I currently can't replace the motherboard, and I already know the system is capable of recognizing both sticks and 4GB total. I just don't know how.

So is it just windows that does this or have you went into the motherboards bios and seen what it reports?

I've gone into the BIOS, but I can't seem to find anything of use. I would have to go into it again and take pictures with a camera, then bring them all here.

I do not know that board's bios right off hand but there maybe a system information page. Most newer boards have it but since its a 775 I wouldn't know for sure.

I don't know about anything like that for the motherboard. But here's the best I could get for now.

When you go in system information does it say 4096mb or 2048mb?

I would assume that in the Post screen at start up it shows the full 4096? I didn't see anything terribly helpful in the BIOS pics you posted.

The startup screen before Windows boot shows numbers going up and stopping at 2048MB. Using to go all the way to 4096, no longer does. I already attached a picture of the system information, only says 2GB either.

CPU-Z also says 2048MB, Channels # Single.

Well if its only showing 2048 at startup then the OS has nothing to do with it. You have issues with the motherboard or the RAM itself.

The RAM is fine. Already said I checked it in both slots. And I've seen it, it was running with 4GB for 48 hours, so it has to be possible without updating the BIOS or changing RAM or anything. But how?

Clear CMOS? If that doesn't work I'm afraid you're going to have update the BIOS

Well, I can't replace the computer right now. I'm not bricking it over 2GB of RAM, especially with a problem I know is fixable on the current BIOS version.

Well clearing the CMOS certainly isn't going to cause any harm and at this point is the next step in solving the issue.

Those 2 OSs have basically nothing in common and your BIOS may not even be compatible with 7, hence your RAM allocation? issue and our reccomendation/s

Best of luck!

I've already said, I had it working for 2 days before it failed again when I had to reconnect some cables.

So I can call the person who fixed it and see if he remembers, but I already know for certain that it can be made to work on Windows 7 and in the current BIOS version.

Latest BIOS 1101 released June 27, 2012 improve stability win7. Straight from Asus site, I'd link it but I'm posting from my phone. I really suggest updating the BIOS, otherwise good luck :)

It says only 2048 MB installed/ available.

Well, now I turned on Windows Update, then did an update and restarted. Now the BIOS as well as Windows 7 are recognizing all 4GB. Hoping it keeps that way.

Why dont you want to flash your Bios? Your motherboard has EZ Flash on it so it takes 2min, it's fast and resolve issues.

I know you have had some annoying issue with your system OP but none the less even though you maybe reluctant to update your BIOS I do encourage you to as ASUS EZ Flash 2 is indeed easy and beneficial for system, stability.

the OS Has no capability to interact with the bios in the way you are telling you have a intermittent fault thats occurring/correcting every-time it reboots its not possible PERIOD
unless someone went and screwed around with start-up settings a limited the amount of available ram windows can use (takes a fair bit of know how todo that)
a Bios update should not have any impact if it was working before
something is on its way out Possibly the Memory controller / Northbridge
or maby you need to reseat the cpu sometimes if you move em around and they where not locked in correctly it will cause this either way its defiantly a hardware fault
