They have made so many fails in the last years that their share value fell down into the sink.

See Activision, Ubisoft, Square Enix, etc., this is what happens when you screw your customers over. Pro tip: don't.

The days of the big music publishers are ending just as the days of the big game publishers are ending. The only major card left to fall is the film industry. People can publish themselves on the internet without the need of huge corporations producing and marketing a finished product. This is why all three have and continue to try to shackle the internet. They should have learned their lesson by now that doing so is bad for business. Embrace, not shackle, the internet.

hmm the share climb by 40% in the past month might prevent the deal from going through. Also the article said two private equity firms, so no other studio is buying them. Still private equity has a pretty good track record on recovering companies that can be or liquidating the ones that can't. Either way the gaming industry would benefit. Personally I'd love to see it be liquidated as that would send the strongest message to other big devs that price raping your customer base and releasing crap that you have to essentially pay to get fixed does nothing but run your company into the ground.

But a restructure with someone who actually knows business would be okay too I guess.

For private equity, that's attractive. Private equity doesn't want to invest in something that has no chance of recovering. Then again, the meer mention of a potential buyout sends stocks up.

I don't know if there's anyone "who actually knows" the business that is evolving today. I think there's still 5-10 years of evolution to occur yet before all software distribution hits its stride. Whoever strikes the balance, perfectly, between consumer and producer rights will win the long-term war.

As much as I like to malign big bad publishers for their wicked ways, there's just SO many of them that I really don't think this end result has much to do with disgruntled gamers. It's more the trend of FtP games that's causing it.

Many are speculating MS might be one of the few interested and actually capable of this large a purchase. OMG, would THAT be any better? Sometimes it's "Be careful what you wish for" peeps.

I think they see the writing on the wall that big publishers are dropping like flies and they want out before the same happens to Activision-Blizzard (just look at World of Warcraft's drop in subscriptions). Right now, Activision-Blizzard is keeping up with the stock market but it's a pretty sure bet it isn't going to stay that way.

Edit: this is a really interesting read (keep in mind it is a few months old): Stock Ticker: Why EA's Market Valuation Has Crashed

Here's the graph (from that source) I was talking about:

NASDAQ = NASDAQ average (the benchmark for stocks)
TTWO = Take-Two interactive
ATVI = Activision-Blizzard
EA = Electronic Arts
Rob Fahey said:
Investors are clearly deeply worried about the games industry's biggest companies - they're cautious on Activision Blizzard, and downright negative on EA and Take Two.

How is Vivendi going to sell Acti without getting stuck having to pay that huge court settlement with West and Zampella that their suit with them will no doubt result in, or take much less for them than they'd like? Either way, Acti is one of the biggest lemons in publishing right now. No one in their right mind would want to buy them, unless the price were pretty low.

The value of all game companies is going to drop or has dropped as they invest in new engine tech for next-generation consoles. These engines cost millions for liscencing, and don't tend to pay off until years after investment...when titles launch,

Until they do, you gotta pay your employees, too.

So then, you got your liscence, you got your game, now you gotta sell. Time to pay for marketing!! Oh yeah, don't forget to keep paying those employees!

OH, you are laying off those empkyees, to make sure to break even in the end? How do you make another game?

Ah, you're gonna start another company, because you don't raelly think your game is good...oh....

In all of that, EA's the rich dad covering the bills. His pocket is only gonna stay so full, for so long...and he's got alot of kids.

Downright negative about EA...gee I wonder if that golden poo has anything to do with it ;).

In a perfect world...Valve buys EA, kills Origin, hires Chris Roberts, and re-releases Wing Commander. Then goes through the list of titles killed by EA and starts bringing them back. Valve makes billions, Gabe Newell becomes the new Steve Jobs.

In a not so perfect world...someone else buys EA, kills Origin, puts EA games back on Steam. Allows devs control over their own titles again. DICE, BW...etc all see a golden age of gaming.

So either way...Origin dies and gamers everywhere rejoice. But I'm hoping for the special event Valve ending.

If they started listening to their players, supporting games for more than 6 months, maybe they'd wouldn't be in decline. You can scam someone so many times before they stop supporting you.

I didn't buy BF3 with the 35 DLCs. I however played almost every other BF on the PC (1942-Vietnam-2-2142-BC2), tried Medal of Honor (good job killing a series, they could of patched the game, instead they release a new one), I'm done with them. I love SimCity, sadly, I just wish Maxis was on their own.

Yeah, if only they put as much effort into making sure games are released polished as they did on marketing we could have quality games that sell for themselves, not from dodgy marketing.
