I think my PSU is dead?

So I was gaming yesterday and all of a sudden my computer turned off. When I went to turn it back on the Fan LEDs lit up and spun about a quarter of the way before it turned off. It was a quick flash. I tried again and nothing. Then I turned the PSU off for a little and tried again. Same thing, it turned on for a split second then off. I tried everything to see what the problem is. I took out a stick of RAM tried. Nothing tried my GPU, nothing. I took the mobo out and tried it like that. Nothing so it is not a short with my case. I also did the paperclip thing. It did exactly what it did when everything was hooked up. Turn on for a split second then off. I also changed my thermal paste and re seated my cooler just for hopes. What is going on? I was saving to get a GTX 670. Now I have to spend it. And HOPE it works.

Specs
CPU- I5-2500k Not overclocked. With the Hyper 212 cooler.
RAM- G-Skill Sniper 8GB
HDD- WD Caviar Black 500GB
Mobo- GIGABYTE GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3
GPU-GTX 570

What PSU do you have? You didn't list it.

Oh I'm sorry the Corsair TX 750. If it is my PSU then great. I can only afford that. If it is I am thinking of upgrading to the Corsair HX750 gold plus.

It might be if you tried it with just the board. Corsair recommends testing with one fan connected to a molex connector to see if the PSU powers up or not.

"My Machine doesn’t start up when I hit the power button, is the PSU faulty?

Disconnect everything from your PSU except for one single fan that should be connected directly to one of the Molex connectors. Then, get a small piece of wire, paper clip, or suitable object and short the green pin and a black pin on the 24-pin connector on the power supply. The voltage present is a very low signaling voltage so no worries of being shocked. Your PSUs fan should spin along with the fan you have connected to it. If this is the case, your PSU may not be receiving the power on signal from your motherboard and you should consider other causes of the problem you’re having."

Also, you may be able to RMA it if it is faulty. Why buy a new one when yours has a 5 year limited warranty?

Get a good PSU tester and see what that tells you. But yeah your PSU sounds toasted to me.

I did what you said. The fan connected to my PSU and my PSU will spin for a second then stop. So my PSU is faulty? And I want to get the one I mentioned because it is gold certified unlike mine which is Bronze. Also has more Watts and it's modular. Also I am very impatient. To wait for the RMA

You may as well RMA it and sell the replacement, at least.

I don't have another Only able to do the Paperclip test. And it would only run for a split second as usual. And for 5 monthes. I can RMA it. But I want to know for sure that. That is the problem.

Since your PSU exhibits the same symptoms no matter what is attached to it, then it is most likely the PSU. I would RMA it as I am fairly sure it is the issue after you tested it by itself.

I'll do that. I tried testing my PSU out on another computer(One that did not work in the first place) Just to see if maybe it would work and still nothing. But the computers did not work anyways. Also when I did the paperclip thing. It would only turn on for a second then stop. But if I was to keep tapping the black wire with the other side plugged into the green. It would keep rotating. But in a way as if it was turning on and off constantly. I don't know if that means my PSU works. Since It would not work the original way. Sorry If I sound stupid. Just don't want to end up not having a computer. Took me forever to get something like this.

Understood, I know the feeling. What I think happened was something burned out in your PSU, and now every time you attempt to start the PSU, one of the voltages being supplied is overshooting causing the overvoltage protection to kick in, something shorted out tripping the protection, or another issue.

When my GTX 460 died, my PSU exhibited the same symptom. However, it was the video card in my case and not the PSU, which works perfectly to this day.

By the way, one of my friends had an issue with his new 3570K/GTX 670 machine shutting down randomly with a new Corsair TX 750 v2, so he's returning the PSU and getting the refreshed HX750 this time (wanted modular cables anyway).

Ok thanks for understanding. I have just been reading around allot and some say it could be the Motherboard. But I don't see how when it was perfectly fine. Hopefully The new PSU works. If not then I guess I am screwed.

I was thinking it could be as well, but since you isolated the PSU from everything else and it still shuts off, I think we can agree it is the PSU. :)

I'll just stay optimistic until I get a new PSU. Hopefully all runs well. Thanks for helping

Hi, this a bit of a conidence. I have a fairly similar pc and I now face exactly the same problem. The pc will turn on but a split second later it will turn off. If I then try to turn it on again on the case it won't do anything. If I unplug and replug in the power supply, I get the on and off thing again.

Its been running just over a year without a problem, as I did a major upgrade (new processor/mobo/ram (upgraded from Core2Quad/P5QL-E)

Earlier on today I was browsing the web and the Nvidia driver stopped responding for about 5-10 seconds and then recovered again.

What the hell is this?

Antec 900 Case (first version)
i5 2500k - Overclocked turbo to 4.4ghz
8GB HyperX Genesis Grey Ram
Asus P8P67 R3 ATX
Nvidia GTX470 1.5gb (brought in August 2010)
WD Caviar Black 1TB, WD Caviar Black 500gb and Corsair Force 60GB
Antec Earthwatts 650w (brought in December 2008) (which I believe is basically the same PSU as a corsair tx650)

I didn't know whether to start my own thread or not because the thread is only a day old.

Any help, I'd also like to hear from the OP if the new power supply did the trick. I might need to do the same!

Well.. The PSU is four years old, I would consider replacing it regardless. As far as your issues go it could be drivers, corruption, etc. Check the event log for errors and warnings to see what comes up. :)

Really, a four year old psu to be replaced? I understand that power draw increases with age but it really hasn't been pushed to the limit. I think my pc only draws about 400-450w when gaming with all fans and acessories running. I have a 11 year old no name 250w in my first tower. Still works fine, if a little on the noisy side. Unfortunatly I can't plug it in to my modern day pc just to see if it boots my gaming rig as it doesn't have a 4 pin CPU connector and the main power connector is only a 20pin.

I have a HTPC I could connect the Earthwatts up to (P8H61-M, Hiper 200w psu ,i3 2100), but it'll take me about half a day to do. Most of that will be untangling all of the wires!

Funny thing is my mobo light is green as normal, so could it still be the power supply stuffed, or could it be anything else?

I'd check the event log, if my pc was working. Could a dead graphics card cause this problem?

For your particular problem of turning on and shutting off right away it is not likely a GPU issue.

Yep, I think I'll try the power supply on the other pc tomorrow first. I'll allow the whole day then ;) Thanks for the advice.
