Hey all,

I have been having some issues with my 5970 lately (I think it is the problem).

Sometimes, when I go and play games like BF3 and D3 on fullscreen, my screen goes blank and there is no video output on the screen. When I press alt+enter to play in window mode, everything goes back to normal. I can play the game in window mode and see things on my screen. Movies work fine in full screen - the issue comes when I play games only.

Also, this doesn't happen all the time. It happens on occasion, which makes this even more strange.

Any ideas anyone?

I've just reformatted my computer and I have a new power supply in my rig (this was also happening on my old PSU).

Thanks!
David

sounds like a typical crossfire/ULPS problem
make sure you have the latest app profiles installed
you can try disabling ULPS and see if that helps http://ulps.achromaticcomputing.com/
else you might need to setup some manual 2d/3d clock profiles

I didn't even think about downloading the app profiles for my 5970 - I know it's technically 2 downclocked 5870s, but I always thought about it as a single card. I normally have it installed as I also run a 5850 along side it, however, I recently took it out of the rig.

So far, it has worked. It's just peculiar how the problem would come up some of the time, instead of all of the time. Like earlier today, I was playing BF3 fullscreen no problem; however, when I restarted my computer and tried playing again, there seemed to be no output when games went fullscreen.

Thanks! If anyone else has advice, please continue to post it - no reason to attempt an RMA right? The reason I ask is the warranty is running out soon and would rather send it in if it had a problem.

Also, why would disabling ultra-low power state help? (just learned about it now - thanks!)

CAPs, formerly known as "Crossfire Application Profiles", are now known as "Catalyst Application Profiles" and sometimes even contain improvements for Single-GPU setups.

issue 1. some cards particularly crossfire setups have issues with the gpu power state switching
normally the gpu trys to clock its self up><down depending on the load this can cause issues: crashes, BSODS ,screen corruption

issue 2. ULPS is ultra low powstate basically puts the gpu partially to sleep can cause performance issues and crashes when the gpu tries to resume normal operation mode

Are there any downsides to disabling ULPS, other than using more electricity?

So, I just hit the same problem after installing the latest crossfire app profiles from amd. Yesterday it worked fine after I installed the profile, however, today when I went to play, I wasn't getting any video output when the game was put into fullscreen.

So, I am going to try disabling ULPS and see how that goes. Wish me luck!

Well, I just tried disabling ULPS and I still get a blank black screen when I tried playing fullscreen on BF3.

Anyone have any other ideas?

I tried the Catalyst Application Profiles and they unfortunately, didn't work. I also tried disabling ULPS and still, I get a black screen when I try to play BF3 in fulscreen.

Any other ideas?
