Alright so i recently bought a new gpu and my first ssd, then i was checking the other hardware i would need for my next big upgrade.

I have looked quite a bit for what would be the best socket for Intel and it seems to be LGA1155. But then, i'm not sure which chipset i should look for, like what is the best right now? I surely want at least 2 features included which is usb 3.0 and sata 6gb/s (a.k.a. sata3). Also, i need minimum 6 usb plugs for the motherboard.

As for RAM, i will probably get Corsair since i have had good experiences with them, i'm just wondering if i should go for 1866mhz instead of 1600mhz for speed. I'm sure i will get at least 8gb.

Finally, for the CPU, i had either an i5 or i7 in mind. I'm assuming an i7 would be better, just have no idea what i should be getting.

So yeah i guess that's it for the questions. My specs are in the drop down menu.

Thanks in advance!

chipset: Z77 for overcloking and SLI/crossfire. B75 if you're not going to overclock or dual GPUs. If you go with a B75 board make sure that it supports all the features you want as B75 can support all the mayor Z77 features but some of those are optional (Smart connect, Smart response, Rapid storage, etc.)

RAM: 1600Mhz seems to be the sweet spot. I wouldn't go for anything higher unless you come across a cheap 1866 kit. Just make sure to check out the latencies.

CPU: a Core i5 will suffice if your main use will be gaming.

Is there a a big gap of price between Z77 and B75 boards?

What does the latencies matter for the RAM?

And, is there a real performance difference between an i5 and i7?

i7 has hyper threading, i5 does not. So most people here opted for the i5 to save $ and put that $ into the graphics card.

Well as i said i already bought the new gpu and an ssd. I plan to buy the rest (mobo, cpu, ram) possibly next month or the month after.

Well, i guess i have a good idea of what i should get now.

Do you guys have any suggestions for motherboards and cpus?

1. Somewhat. On newegg the cheapest B75 is $55. The cheapest Z77 is $90.

ASRock B75M-DGS LGA 1155 Intel B75 SATA 6Gb/s USB ...
ASRock Z77M LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB...

Here's a block diagram of both chipsets for comparison:

Basically you lose overcloking and some PCIe lanes from Z77 -> B75.

2. Not much but, for example, a 1866 CL11 kit would be less responsive than a 1600 CL9 kit (by about 0.2 milliseconds though but still). You'd probably won't notice the difference but if you're ogling a 1866 kit make sure that's actually an upgrade over 1600.

3. for gaming? No.

Alright then, i guess i'll be looking for a Z77 board and look out for the latency too.

So have any other suggestions for either Asus or Gigabyte motherboards? But also cpus?

I must say i like Gigabyte the most since i've had mostly good experiences with them. They make sturdy and solid hardware.

Asrock is decent. I'm a Gigabyte person as well but the features on Gigabyte boards have never been as in depth as others. Last board I went with ASrock because their quality has improved a lot and also because it offered better features than a similar Gigabyte board for roughly the same price.

All makers have problem boards. Some just have production issues which lead to more defective units/etc. Just read up on it before. If you see a lot of people noting the same issue over and over then it is a good bet there was problems in dev. Likely the maker will release a revision which fixes this but you'll never know which version you'll get in the order.

Well i always thought Asrock was a branch of Asus, which i'm probably wrong on that but yeah. It seems Asrock is of less quality considering the price, they're cheaper.

But i could be wrong since i never tried a motherboard from them. I've always went with gigabyte except once with Asus, which i had quite a bad experience with.

ASRock started off as a budget department a ASUS to complete with other companies that sold Budget board. It has such great success that it separated from ASUS.

Ive always like Gigabyte boards. They are very well built and you can see the quality. I bought a couple of ASRock board and looking at them they are not the quality I was use to. However they perform amazingly well and I have not had one issue with ASRock.

They seperated from Asus huh? Well that's good to know, guess they're pretty good then!

I will get either a Gigabyte or Asrock then.

Any suggestions of motherboards from them?

Okay so i have narrowed my choices for a new cpu to either the i5 3570k which is 220$ right now and the i7 2600k which is 300$.

I have checked some benchmark charts and the i7 has about 30% higher score than the i5.

So what do you guys think would be better for gaming?

It doesn't matter really. I would by the i5 3570k. There's not much benefit with HT in gaming

In the meantime, what do you suggest for cpu cooling?

I was looking at the Asrock Extreme6 motherboard and there's a lot of 1 star reviews...doesn't sound good to me. I also looked at the Asus sabertooth z77 board but i'm a bit worried about fitting hardware on there.

Every manufacturer is going to have its duds and people is more vocal when they have a problem than when they don't.

I'm mainly a Gigabyte/Asrock man and so far I haven't had a problem *knocks wood*. Maybe I could interest you in a GA-Z77X-DH3 or GA-Z77X-UDH3? Superb boards. The DH3 has 8 SATA ports (2 more than the UDH3) and the UDH3 has some nice stuff like a debug LCD and reset bios switch.

Oh reset BIOS, that sounds like a nifty feature! I'll check the DH3 since i already had a look at the UDH3.

Okay, so i have looked at motherboards a bit and now i'm not sure which one i should get between those 3:

- MSI Z77A-GD65
- Asus P8Z77-V Pro
- Gigabyte UD3H

From what the customer reviews on newegg canada says, the MSI has the highest 4 to 5 stars ratings, gigabyte being the lowest.

I have had good experiences with Gigabyte but i must admit this is a bit alarming that 33% of the reviews there are 1 to 3 stars only. Or is it just Newegg maybe?

Can anyone help me choose?

Keyboard Razer Black Widow Ultimate Chroma
Okay, so hopefully i get an answer this time.

I was seriously thinking about getting the MSI Z77A-GD65: http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=69234

I'm just concerned about the cpu cooler, there's a 10$ off rebate on ncix for this one: http://www.ncix.ca/products/index.php?sku=47090

I just want to be sure it won't obstruct the RAM slots. I will be getting either one of these RAM sticks: http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=59431&vpn=CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B&manufacture=Corsair&promoid=1265 (that was my first choice)
http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=55445&vpn=CMX8GX3M2A1600C9&manufacture=Corsair (that's my second choice, but it might be better to get those since they are low profile).

So, what do you guys think about all this? If you have other less obstructing cpu coolers to suggest, please do!

The Noctua NH-D14 will cover your ram slots. You will need LP Ram
CM Hyper 212 EVO Will not (but is close)
The Cooler Master TPC 812 covers the slots you will need LP
Just check the measurements. Anything bigger than the 212 will cause the same issue
