Could PCI slot interfere with a Video Card?

Just a quick question since I see MoBos with PCIe slot next to Legacy PCI slots.

For example I use a Reference HD7770 or higher in the PCI slot, will the GPU's cooler interfere with the connection (since a Legacy PCI slot is taller than a PCIe slot, I was just thinking maybe the card wouldn't fit since the PCI slot is taller and stops it)

:\ kinda a stupid question, but I'm curious

Thanks for your time!

Actually the answer is also possibly YES it will interfere, but not due to the height of the PCI slot, it will interfere if you have something in the PCI slot. ;)

Unless you make sure the cooler on the card in question is only a single slot one, in which case it should be OK. I assume you also mean using the example card in the PCI-e slot.

This likely means using only the lower level cards in a given series or using non reference coolers.

Some boards have a PCI next to the PCI-e but there is an additional card-width gap between them too letting a dual-slot cooler card fit. :)

Do you have a specific motherboard in mind and do you plan to put something in the PCI slot, once we know that then you can get more specific advice.

Well How about the AsRock H77M with the Powercolor HD7770, or an ASUS HD7770 DC.... I'm picking between the two cards

EDIT: I'm not planning on putting anything on the PCI slot.... although I am planning to place a PCIe x1 WLAN/WiFi card on the 2nd PCIe x16 slot

That's a good choice as it has 2 PCI and 2 PCI-e and they are at opposite ends - if you had enough space from the left hand side of board the case you could fit 2 x PCI-e dual slot cards in there (assuming the 2nd slot isn't crippled by the x4 electrical connection) and a PCI. So for this board you will have no issue with just a 7770. On the t cards, I'd go for either the cheapest or quietest - unless one has a bundle with some accessory you need and the price is better than buying it on its own.

Make sure the video card goes in the slot that has the X16 connection. :)

I'd suggest a USB WiFi adapter would be better as it will leave your slot free for the future and likely be cheaper than PCI-e one - unless you think someone will steal it. ;)

I actually choose this over the MSI H77MA-G43 since this board has more USB ports, better Bios, more fan headers (5 vs. Msi's 3) and decent overclockability (for a H77 board)

The sad part about the board is the PCI slots tho.... and only 2 slots for RAM. I don't that much choices for decent mobos here

There's almost always a compromise unless cost is no object - and often even then.

Good luck with whatever you end up building.
