New PC Build Being Slow?

Hello Everyone! Just built my new rig:

AMD FX-6100
Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3
Dominator DDR3 2X2GB 1600 MHZ
XFX AMD 6770 1GB
XIGMATEK LOKI SD963 92mm CPU Cooler
2 X 320GB WD SATA (USED from previous build)
Dell Widescreen 19"
Corsair Carbide Series 200R
SILVERSTONE ST50F-ES 500W

I have been noticing that the performance is not what i expected, it seems to be lagging somewhat and just overall slowness which make me believe that the hard drives are the culprit. Not currently overclocked, hard drives are couple years old at least.

What do you guys think? :toast:

startup itself isnt too bad seems like its taking way to long after logging into windows and when im trying to do hard drive intensive stuff.

How old are these? I/O could be your bottleneck. If these are 5400 RPM drives you may not be getting much more than 50MB/s off these drives, where a modern 7200RPM 1TB per platter drive can do >120MB/s.

If the computer is responsive once something opens, then it's I/O.

If your computer is taking a really long time to shutdown, it is most likely I/O.

Is your HDD activity LED plugged in? If the LED is lit whenever the machine is slow... You see where I'm going with this?

How quickly does a large file (>1Gb) copy from one drive to the other? Also you might want to check your S.M.A.R.T logs, a drive could be failing. A lot of drives performance will go downhill before they fail.

These drives are about four or five years old which makes me think that is the bottleneck.

But its responsive after everything loads..

What program do you recommend for viewing the reports?

Get this and use it as your sytem drive, then put those 2 hard drive in raid 0 and use it as a games drive.

These might seem obvious, but gonna ask anyway (just to make sure) Did you try to disable S.M.A.R.T, it can cause HDD transfer slowdowns in certain situations.

Also, make sure you have no filesystem errors on any of the drives (including hidden partitions, if you have any)

yea i agree i need to get one thats my next purchase on the list. Just got the new mobo ram and cpu last couple weeks.

When a hard drive is near mechanical failure, many times it will move slow like you have described. That and the fact that hard drive life is usually 4-5 years, means you should probably replace those, and backup the data while you can.

64 gig for $84? You can do better than that. Should be able to get a 120gig for that much. Or a 240 for $160.
