As soon as I overclock higher with increased voltage the temps go above 80C and I get booted out of windows. also if I set the memory to run at its correct speed of 1600 MHz that increases the temps, I have tried several different settings at 3.8GHz but none seem to work with lower temps, I keep the voltage low I have boot problems or memory dump blue screens, or booting out of windows, any suggestions would be appreciated, oh I have just read several posts about it being a nightmare to overclock the i7 920 bloomfield CO/C1 revision, is this true? Can anyone help with possible setting for the next level of overclocking, thanks

Did you install the CPU yourself? If so, how was the thermal paste applied? Sometimes something so mechanical can be an issue vs. BIOS or software related.

Another question to search out, the I7-920-BF, does the B revisons run better or cooler?

tx3 is a cheap cooler you get what you pay for
you need a better cooler period
I would't use a TX3 on a stock AMD system let alone a overclocked i7 ....
you are gonna need a better cooler and thats all there is to it
something in the 40 to 60 USD range should be good

yeah, that cooler might be holding you back. But what are the temperatures under load at stock clocks? When I had a 920 at 4.0GHZ it ran at about 70c under load with my megahalem cooler.

the tX3 is a cutdown Hyper212 and a hyper 212 is barely sufficient for a 2500K@ stock
sufficient=under 75c @ load

I think Edwards Martin Williton should have installed a better cooler lol.

But seriously, you are going to need alot better cooling for a chip like that when it comes to overclocking it. Do some research on it and you will also learn a thing or two in the process.

Good luck.

The C0/1 OCd poorly and ran hot. Then theres the bottom of the range cooler that youre using which might be an upgrade over stock but it just doesn't cut it when overclocking a chip that has a 130W TDP.

don kno if tiss relevent, but when I first ran my CM Hyper EVO, I forgot to take the prtective film off the bottom of cooler before installing ti and it ran I little hot. It's fine now, properlly installed in artic silver and no prtective film. Even the old 80mm fan keeps her pering nicely.

Have you tried disabling hyperthreading to see how big an impact this makes on temperatures?

thanks for all of the suggestions, coolmaster tx3 review.jpg I looked at the review on hardware secrets to see how well this cooler performed against other coolers, it seemed to perform middle of the road, not the best or the worst

what I did notice is that is does run hotter in my system than when tested in the review, but I do have a very small cramped office without much air or ventilation

I will turn hyper threading off and see if that makes a difference

could anyone possible suggest a good cooler to use with my system?

C0 stepping 920's came in a huge variety of binning quality, I had one until 2 month's ago that I ran 24/7 at 4.1gig with HT on but with very good Air, many were just hot!

I too would suggest better cooling, however you should still be able to get 3.6gig out of that cooler (if not already, get another 120mm fan on so you have a dual push/pull setup), my suggestions to acheive 3.6gig would be firstly (I am assuming you are getting a 21x multiplier with your Turbo enabled, and therefore EIST is enabled and you have your windows power setting to "performance"?), use NO AUTO settings for key voltages, instead.......

1. Set BClk to 172
2. Set VCore to 1.3V
3. Set QPI/VTT to 1.3V
4. Set QPI to auto (if not already)
5. leave RAM on auto at this stage but manually set voltage to one increment above specs (this should show as a 2:8 multi in CPU-Z)
6. Set uncore to twice the speed of your ram (you will see the speed when you select the multi) Do not leave on auto.
7. Enable Load line Callibration (not auto)
7. leave other volts to auto for time being.

If it boots, leave it 5 minutes in windows, then startup Realtemps and check idle temps...... then get back and report. If you use the "optimised" overclock settings, they will often pump in far more voltage than is actually required, instability is often with these chips not jus down to voltage levels but to other settings.

I used to have an i7-920, I can't remember what revision it was but I got it when the i7s first came out. I tried OCing it with a Zalman CNPS-9900ALED and I think from memory I only managed around ~3.5Ghz without ramping up the fan speeds too much or it overheating. About 75-80C is what I remember being fairly normal temperatures whilst gaming at that OC and about 85C-90C whilst testing with prime95. Note: this was with hyperthreading enabled.

Good luck with the OC, just don't expect tooo much out of the older i7s. I agree with other people though, you might want to think about upgrading your cooling as the TX3 is fairly low end.

As far as coolers go, if you have a lot to spend an Antec 920 or Corsair H100i will be nice. Or high-end air cooling you would be looking at Noctua D14 or Zalman CNPS-11X (I have tried the Zalman on a friends computer running an i7-930 @ stock with the low noise resistor added and max temps were about 60C running prime95 with 28C ambient).

Mine stops overclocking without serious additional voltage/high temps at 3.6 GHz, though I got a notoriously bad batch.

I have played around with several 920's and all were the lesser of the bunch meaning they were CO's. I have never had any issue getting stable at 4GHZ and my personal one runs 4.2GHZ 24/7.....and has been for 5years or so. I can get max temps up to 93 but that with all 8 threads at 100%....My CPU is still going strong with no issues. I would recommend at least a V8 cooler for good clocks.

Edit: I have also found that the early 920's can run up in to the low 90's and as long as they are stable they will have no issue with these temperatures.

If you do much multithredded work such as encoding/decoding etc, otherwise if you mainly game, surf the web, watch vids etc then the 4 cores are enuff, you will also be able to drop the VCore lots too, I could not run any higher than 4.2gig with HT on with my old C0 on air, but I could run 4.44gig with HT disabled.

inding impossible to overclock a I7 920 Bloomfield Revision CO/C1 without temp +80C

I am internally grateful, these settings actually work, still runs hot but I disabled hyperthreading to get the temp down to an acceptable level, thanks a lot

I am internally grateful, these settings actually work, still runs hot but I disabled hyperthreading to get the temp down to an acceptable level, thanks a lot

If you have disabled HT you should be able to significantly reduce your VCore also, that will in turn further reduce temps, otherwise keep VCore and overclock higher!
