All of the above. You are not guaranteed a good overclocker. I have two 7970's and one clocks all the way to 1300, the other one struggles at 1125. It's a lottery I'm afraid.

yes, they only guarantee the advertised clock. If you want a specific overclock then just find a factory overclocked card that's closest. Read reviews and forums to see what range people generally get.

From my experience, a better shroud/heat sink/fan system generally helps it oc better because of cooler temps. But some chips just won't go high and some will go higher even when it's burning at 90c.

I have never ran into a problem with temps when overclocking a GPU. It is usually artifacts and outright failures for me.

Reviews are freaking me out.
With the same card one goes to 1200/1450 (core/memory) from 1000/1125 mhz while others struggle at 1075/1250.
Same for the oc editions

That's because you're reading reviews on OCs, when the quality of each individual chip, even within the same exact model, can vary enough to change those results drastically. You need to understand how the binning, review sample and review process in general works.

First off, most reviews are done right after a GPU model releases. Review sites are sent samples of GPUs, which are generally hand picked for bin quality. That usually means they have very efficient, low leakage chips that run a bit cooler and perform a bit better on their stock air coolers.

The cases where info from review sites applies to the consumer is when A), the card is bought near it's release within the same bin lot, or B) only stock speed testing is done or read by the customer. If you wait and buy a card well after the prices drop, there's less chance you'll get the same bin quality.

Note as well that clock speed isn't everything. I've seen reviews that show a much higher clock speed attained on one brand/model of card that ended up resulting in slightly less FPS than another brand/model of card on the game they were benched with when OCed, which was BF3.

The sweet spot for radeon right now is 7850. It cost about $30-40 more than a 7770. No amount of OC from a 7770 will match a 7850. The good thing about the 7850 is that you ge that performance without the power and risk penalty. The 7870 and on is priced too high to be considered value to me. You can probably OC the 7850 better since they are intentionally underclocked. Most people I know and everywhere I read easily get 7870 level performance with 7850 OC.

well. If you wanna have the enjoyment of overclocking, the pre-overclocked cards shouldn't be your option. As I know, the setting of its voltage is the highest one according to AMD's guideline....but I am lazy, so I choose non-OC gigabyte card...
