Hi everyone,

So we have two computers in our house. An i7 950 one @ 4ghz w/ 2 570s that is the main gaming pc, and an older q6600@ 3ghz w/ a 285. The other day, the q6600 machine died. Thinking of getting an i5 3570k and a 660 or something to use as a new gaming machine. The thing is, with both Haswell and the nvidia 7xx series around the corner, should I get a cheap i3 or amd system to last for the next couple of months? Or should I just get a decent 3570k build and...not wait for haswell. (we need two working computers)

it can be both, if you can wait, then wait, but if you really need one right now then go with the 3570K. and a 660. the njust skip haswell and go build another rig after a few years

if you live near a Microcenter, now is the time to get the 3570K at $189. Haswell is only going to be 5-10% faster and the prices will surely be higher.

What he said. And I think that a 660ti would better suit that setup versus a plain 660 in my opinion.

Unfortunately, I live in Canada...so microcenter is out of the option for me.

Best price i could find on the 3570k was ~$220

If i did end up going for it, then what kind of motherboard should I get? (Going to pair it with an H100 for cooling)

Yah I haven't finalized my video card yete. Might end up splitting the 570s and using one in each build until i get a good price on one.

Cheap, but OC decently, Biostar TZ77XE4.

If you want to spend a bit more, there are tonnes of options. Pick the colors you like...really.

No OC, Gigabyte B75M-D3H is a great option.

VGA, 7970 GHZ or 670/680 will play nearly every game @ 1080p and 60FPS with maxed out details(maybe not 8xAA though).

I would go for it and the Biostar TZ77E4 that dave mentioned is a great board for the price. I whooped 5.2GHz on a 2600K with it. Overclocking bad azz board

Go For It

"Life is short, but the days are long" Now is a great time to buy a 3570K, Z77 motherboard, and 2400 MHz RAM - they may get cheaper as Haswell nears, but not by much, because they're already a bargain compared to past releases. Clarksfield, Sandy, Ivy, Haswell, they're all plenty fast enough for gaming machines, especially when overclocked, so waiting for "the next big thing" isn't as rewarding as it used to be. If Z87 had support for DDR4, it might be worth the wait, but it's not coming until 2015, apparently.
It wasn't clear from your post whether you build your own PCs or not, but systems such as you mentioned (3570K, Z77, 660 Ti) start at about $1200 Ca http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229388
If you are inclined towards building your own, you can do the same system for $700-$800, or for a couple hundred more, you can pick a much better motherboard, power supply, and case and have a system that will last for years.
