Unable to OC after GPU upgrade

I recently bought a used 5870 and placed it in an old 775 system with a Q6600 and a Gigabyte P31-DS3L. Before adding the 5870 I could OC the CPU to 3 Ghz easy, now it won't even OC 1 Mhz over 2.4Ghz, enabling bus frequency override makes it restart with it disabled.
When I pop in a 7750 I can OC no problem.

Is the PSU a complete dud? I've had no restarts while gaming or mining.

Yes, also disabled all power saving features, no change.

380W psu on a 5870(=200W).
psu is ur culprit.

7750 sips very little juice.

5870 drinks all the juice and leave nothing for anything else.

So make sure you get minimum 600w PSU (good quality) if you are going to OC

It restarts only when I enable host clock control, with no change to bus speed or voltage. Does this option change something in the way the board distributes power?

might be. dont know for sure. but you definitely need an atleast 500W CPU to run a 5870.

Need a higher wattage PSU. That 380w PSU probably hates you right now.

Only PSU I can afford right now is the Corsair CX500. But I would feel like throwing money out the window seeing the reviews it has.

Why get the 520, when the 620w OneMoar linked is cheaper, and then the same price after shipping costs? and Buy it today, so you can get it on sale for its current price.

the 520 is good unit I have one in my rig runs a 6870 3 hard drives and a 4Ghz Phenom II

the CX500 isnt half as bad, i use it in most builds that i do. none of them have given me any headaches yet.
