Because it's wrong. For power users and gamers and the like sure it's good (throw in a laptop and some servers there too :D), but for most people high powered rigs are useless. Seriously, anything faster than Core 2 Duos are a waste for the vast majority of computer users.

Depends on the user.

From what I can recall, intel want to get their IGPU solutions to the point of they compete in the midrange arena.. so in current terms that would be 660 / 7750 territory. Intel have a LONG way to go before they are even at that level but given their stupendous R&D budget I can see it happening in the next 5 years, 3 years if they really push things.

Just like to throw in the mix as they are gpu's, phone gpu's are getting better and better, some of the new ones have multi core too. I don't know how they compare to desktop/laptop gpu's though.

I wouldn't think their any better than just being capable of playing your favourite facebook game :p for most phones anyway, some phones likely have graphics chips about the level of the original playstation now. Phone graphics don't interest me much, mainly because playing a game on a phone is a real pain in the arse the keys are too tiny >.<

Intel should open up Iris Pro for the desktop users... Can't see a reason to maintain Crystalwell on BGA packages.

Ya, I don't understand it either. If iris pro was say on the i3's it would give amd a run for its money on its apu's. It is more powerful even in gpu compute compared to the a10 5800k.

Intel rising in 50% jumps in gpu power each generation I find quite fun to watch.

Just like to throw in the mix as they are gpu's, phone gpu's are getting better and better, some of the new ones have multi core too. I don't know how they compare to desktop/laptop gpu's though.

I remember seeing some 3dmark scores that placed the newest top of the line phones coming very close to amd brazos systems. Probably want to look that up yourself.

I don't think Intel graphics today are relatively that much different than they were in the past. For example, i810 could play basic 3D games in 1999. 845, 865, 910, etc all could adequately play some games during their day. Intel just keeps pace with this sort of baseline capability.

The new IGP with eDRAM is interesting but it's not going to be a game changer for any gamer.

The reality is Intel could build an awesome game solution if they desired to do so. They don't see enough profit in the effort and so they don't. They do see profit in GPGPU though and that's why they are steaming ahead in that area with boards like Knight's Corner / Xeon Phi.

I am impressed with the HD4000.
It runs almost every game out there on medium - lower settings playable.
Older games like CoD4: MW even on high.

Infact it is only ~ %10 slower on average than my Mobility Radeon HD3650 in my T500.

A full on Iris Pro with an i3 would beat any APU, in gaming. We'll see what happens in the coming months.

Gaming and compute that is. It would force amd to really make a more powerfull apu. I would love to see and apu arms race.

No. They are not good for much... yet. If they can keep up a 50% jump each generation I while amd and nvidea jump 25% they will catch up eventually. How far intel graphics will go I do not know. That is really why I made this topic. I find intels graphics prospects highly interesting.

Good thread topic.

The current perceived need (in other words, the market) for IHD SOC graphics was obviously for nothing more than playing HD video content, not gaming, not high end 3D graphics. Not to mention AERO :slap:

But, just look at that graph. It appears that in another 5 generations, they'll be targeting mid range graphic capabilities. Or, if they put enough horsepower into development, a lot sooner.

I personally think Intel needs to slow down on their advancement, my Quadro NVS 160M is now sucking worse than it did new :p.

But related to the original topic, I'm actually glad to see that the newer Intel GPUs are able to be somewhat useful. I've had numerous people come up to me because a new game they bought won't run on their Intel graphics, and I've always thought that software companies should warn Intel graphics users or Intel should stop sucking (GMA 950 anyone?).

They have reaaaaaaaallyyyy long way to go. Years. I would say at least decade till they catch dedicated cards.

James, the on die graphics on the 4770K is NOT comparable with A10 APU's. Your taking double the price for a 4770K and not apples to apples. Comparing Intel's graphics on i3's would be apples to apples. Same with laptops featuring core i7 products. Your looking at laptops at twice the cost in some cases.

i doubt the possibility of matching dedicated GPUs given the amount of electronics and size of chip/chips on a video card.

i'll say this much. i just built a rig with the ivy bridge G1610, which has HD 2500 graphics. Nothing great but games ARE playable. I was expecting tf2 to lag or at best play low settings+regular resolution, as with HD 1000 it could only do all low+1024x768.

Nope could play at 1280x1024, med-high settings with 40-60 fps.
all source games played at these settings. Source games aren't the most demanding but they are a lot of fun. IMO intel's integrated shouldn't be scorned and scoffed at anymore.

Agreed. Hd3000 is not too great. It struggles to play minecraft and the original bioshock. I would probably be happy with hd4600's meager performance level though in intel terms. Amd has some nice options too.
