Need a PSU

Hi!

My build so far consists of:

• i7 4770k
• GTX780
• some 16GB of RAM
• Asus Gryphon - thanks cadaveca!
• temjin tj08-e
• Samsung 830 256GB + 1,5TB green

What I need is something to power this build.
I'm going to overclock (not l2n or anything that extreme, closed loop water).
It's a small case since I need portability and a modular PSU is a must in my opinion.

TBH I don't have any idea how much should I spend on a PSU, I've seen some platinum stuff at 150€+, but I'm looking for a cheaper one, at or below 100€ would be perfect!

I know your on a budget but the PSU is one thing you don't want to skimp on. I personally like the PSU i got myself the Silverstone Strider Plus 750W. Its a very solid PSU for the Price

Are you going to be doing SLI in the future? If so an 850W or better would be a good choice. Otherwise, check out the Seasonic SSR-650RM SeaSonic SSR-650RM 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready ...

If you know how multi rail works buy an Antec if you don't buy Seasonic, Corsair or XFX. You'll need a minimum of 550w if you don't overclock if you do get a 600w+ unit ideally 650w if you plan to SLI get a 1000w unit.

I'm pretty certain that my 8350 with 2 GTX 580's is in the 800W range or above. I had a TX750 that would shut down on me If I was cranking the cards and CPU way up there.
Admittedly though the newer GTX's aren't nearly as thirsty and the haswell is a teatodler compared to the piledriver.

A modular psu is not necessary with a TJ-08E case- there is plenty of room in back of the motherboard tray for neatly stashing cables (including a very nice pocket on the side of the psu mounting point). The modular connectors may actually block you from being able to use one of the front 5.25" bays due to the limited space between the psu and the bay.

*Note- I did a build with a PS-07 (same internals as the TJ-08) and had no problem at all using a Corsair TX-750 non-modular psu in it.

As far as psu size a quality 650w unit should be plenty...

Dont buy some ridiculous "efficient" PSU with a 1000watt max. UNLESS you'll be using 80% of it, or More. firstly, A PSU that has a Gold , or Silver rating is USELESS when your only using 40% of it's max capability, Since those ratings are given at 80% or higher usage's. Secondly You'll pay WAY more $$ than you NEED to. I recommend Corsair, NZXT, PC Power & Cooling, Sparkle, FSP. And there Are others as well. This is what I would recommend, it's Modular, efficient , Low cost, and had a 3 year warranty(MANY of theirs have a 5 year instead). See for Yourself, EVEN if the Store is NOT an option, I'd STILL recommend that You go with this Brand.
$89.00 USD before rebate and $69.00 after rebate. Can't go wrong with this one.

Thanks for that info, but I won't be using the 5,25" slots so no worries there (no dvd rom). And I mainly really like the idea of not attaching the extra cables in stead of hiding them behind the mobo like I do now.

Hmm, I know about the extra protection the multi rail system offers and I'd like that, but there are not many availabile. If you have any, please recommend.

Actually, tests for certificates are done (also reviewers do them) at 20-50-100%. So, for example the Seasonic Platinum 660W is 90% or more (reviewer's testing) efficient at 25% or more utilisation. This means it'll stay cooler and its fans are going to be off a lot of the time.


To all those asking about SLI, I'm not going to do SLI or water cooled.

So we've established that 650W is enough, what I'm torn on now is the efficiency vs. price.
Some of you said not to spend a great deal on a very efficient PSU but that I still ought to get a good performing one....

At the same time I'm saying to myself, get the Seasonic Platinum-660 with it's crazy efficiency and voltage stability.
Or should I save those ~35€€ (with a build of this price, it's a funny amount)

580's are power suckers, 780's are not. He is using 4770K so 850 watt is more than ample

The Seasonic X-Gold 650watt would be a good fit for price/performance... and the X-Gold series tends to go on sale often.
