It is also possible that W8 is running the deduplication rutine and has made a huge error estimating the capabilities of your SSD

Things seem much more normal in that picture now.

I'd try installing all the Windows 8 Updates available and see if that helps you out. Since it is a fresh install you are lacking a lot of fixes that have been released.

I started the update process a good 30 or so minutes ago, and it seems to be hanging at 0%.

My old, working Win7 HDD doesn't work with the new hardware, so would that not confirm that Windows 8/my SSD aren't the problem?

Hello
Have you tried to disable Speed step , Core parking, and or check if the ssd is supported by your mainboard
You also can use to tweak and disable some things in win 8 with 8Smoker
http://www.xp-smoker.com/8smokerpro.html

Also try to leave the pc running alone for a few hours

Also you could try win 7 ???
http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-59465.iso
this is a 30days trial

No offence but this has nothing to do with speedstep or Windows 8, any decent dual core with 2-3GB of RAM is more than enough for general use so a quad core system with 4GB is more than enough, and who has disabled services in Windows since Vista/XP? it poses little/none performance improvements in 7/8. Going to 7 will likely solve the problem though so would a reinstall of 8 as it's a problem with his current installation/setup/running processes and not a general problem with Win8.

I installed Win8 about a month ago after falling out with it quite bad when it was first released and if anything my system has sped up since I first installed it though that's likely to do with updates and caching/superfetch etc over time. And I don't mind the start screen either, as soon as it boots up I click desktop and voila, no problem. My only minor gripe is some file types are automatically set to open in metro apps which are a pain in the ass to work with on the desktop, though that's changing file association is for, and I don't miss the start button at all now, I use explorer all the time for my computer, documents, pictures etc and ctrl-x>search for anything I can't get to that easily.

Another possibility if you bought the SSD used is that it may have a nasty malware or virus that was never properly removed. But that is just a guess. Sometimes even a format isn't a sure way to get rid of some viruses. I'd talk to the person you bought it from.

If windows 8 isn't updating google for hanging at 0 % and see how other copped with it.

yes

This is about an over loaded pc that shouldn't be.

Very sensitive subject for you and You didn`t read the previous posts.

Nice to know that you are enjoying your over sized smartphone OS.
Seriously the win 8 is a excellent os all around with a Ugly GUI.

Please make a contribution and actually help:)

Did you install chipset drivers? Sometimes using MS ACHI drivers does this, system isn't stable until chipset drivers are installed, and the drive is either TRIM'd or defragged. I usually only find this on AMD-based systems though, and usually with SSDs, but the odd HDD has done it too. That has me pointing a finger at drive firmware, perhaps, needing the chipset driver before it interacts with the OS nicely.

His screenshot with Realtemp shows 45c max. Maybe something else overheating....?

Oh right, you just quote me without actually replying to what or why you have quoted apart from calling Win8 an smartphone OS, funny that as no smartphone I know can you run desktop on, get down into and change the registry and run x86 programs on, unless I misunderstood you?

There is nothing wrong with Win8, if you think that is the issue and your only suggestion is to go to Windows 7 then I think you should probably change your username because that is not a solution, you sound like all the "i'll always use XP" guys back in the day of Vista which was a very successful OS as is 8.

Come on guys, instead of fighting do as wizzard said and check the drive access % to see if something on your PC is hogging the HDD all the time.

You made me spit coffee :toast:

Seriously calling NdMk2o1o a troll is wrong, he's been here 2 years. If you cant agree/agree to disagree/bite your tongue leave the thread.

3 years, old chum :p :toast:

Regarding the drive it looked ok from his taskmgr screenshots though his CPU usage was an issue at 65%

The OP needs to update us with previous suggestions regarding chipset drivers, his drive status etc

I never met a troll before.

Read above quote, congrats, you just have :toast:

This was my suggested a page back. HDD Tune will tell us immediately whether the OPs HDD is performing as it should.

Here's a screenshot of my disk monitor. I don't really know what to make of it:
http://i.imgur.com/a8Jb55a.png

I also installed HDTune, what should I be doing on it to get the results I/you guys need?

Amidst the incessant OS bickering I might have missed some other input. Let me know if there's anything else I can do.

I'm getting increasingly tired of dealing with this stupid computer; I seriously need to get back to work. Thinking about just buying a new CPU/mobo and crossing my fingers. Is there a reason why I should suspect the SSD/Win8 is the problem, if my old HDD/Win7 also don't work under this new hardware configuration?
