Nothing looks out of the ordinary here?

Right there is your issue, that drive should be running at 240MB/s (sata2) or 450-500MB/s (sata3)

20-40MB/s is 40GB mechanical HDD territory, now what is causing your drive to perform so bad? I suggest changing sata port and cable, also make sure chipset drivers are installed.

Just to give you an idea of how bad your HDtune bench is, here is my 3 year old 1TB 5.4k RPM HDD results, which are 2-3 times better than your 1 year old Sata3 SSD drive

Hmm. Okay, looking up chipset drivers now. Gigabyte doesn't provide Win8 drivers, should I just assume that their Win7 ones will suffice?

Installed chipset drivers, didn't fix it.

Switched SATA cable and port, didn't fix it.

According to this review http://www.trustedreviews.com/Gigabyte-GA-EX58-UD4P_PC-Component_review this M/B only supports 24gig of Triple channel memory and you have 32gig installed, not sure if it makes any difference but maybe take a stick out and make sure the other 3 sticks are in the right slots to enable triple channel

That's what I thought, but the manual I found online said that I could just fully load the first two channels if I had four sticks. Windows also does say that there's 32GB installed.

I tried putting one stick into each channel (3 total), and...well. Now my computer no longer has display functionality. So that's great. Edit: Whoops, I'm dumb and I put the sticks in the wrong slots. Awaiting results now.

Edit2: Hm. HMM. I think we're on to something here. I just put in a single 8GB stick, and the CPU seems to have calmed down. Running a SSD benchmark to see if that's fixed, as well.

Edit3: Here are the results for the new SSD benchmark. Am I correct to assume that these are normal speeds? ie, should I pursue further modification?

That is much better, much better speed now, and not 61% cpu usage. Them sticks on the QVL?

Uh...could you elaborate? I put the sticks in the white slot instead of the blue slot. :p

If M/B only supports S-ATA 2 those speeds seem about right, also have you got the latest BIOS cos the QVL shows 2gig as highest density of memory, maybe memory controller can't handle the higher density of your sticks?

White slots correct according to manual

Sorry, QVL=qualified vendor list, its a list of memory that is tested on your board.

I don't think Them 8GB sticks are going to work in that board.

I agree, maybe the controller can't handle them.

Hm, well my single 8GB stick seems to be running just fine. I can plug in two more to see if it still works?

Just checked on http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=701&catid=8&subid=1389 and highest density they have for tri channel is 3 x 4gig=12gig, has your friend still got the memory he was using in that M/B and did he have it running in Tri channel?
Yes, and yes. But he was using 3x2GB sticks.

I suppose I might want to look into getting a different mobo that supports SATA3 and 32+GB of DDR3, if I want to fully utilize my RAM and SSD? I can always sell back the parts to my friend, if need be.

I'd try with 2 more sticks and see if the problem comes back then you'll know for sure, if it runs ok with the other 2 in aswell then you're laughing

Looks like 3x8GB works fine.

But this question still stands:

Anybody have any insight?

I have one of these for my SSD http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CC-004-SR&groupid=701&catid=49&subcat=424 but it don't run at full SATA3 but is still much faster than SATA2 so I guess it's up to you whether you want to buy new M/B & CPU

Sata II should still not be that slow. SSD's do not need 6G of bandwidth. Yes it may be a bit slower than Sata III but I am not sure this is the problem. I think Asus is the only manufacturer that makes a X58 board with sata II........ the came out with 1 model at the end of the X58 run

His problem was his RAM which I think he's got sorted now & I don't think he'll get a M/B with SATA3 for his i7 920 which is a few years old now, he has a brand new 840 pro that he wants full speed from, I was just giving him an alternative to buying a new M/B & CPU by using an add-in card for his SSD

Things are fixed then? No more suttering?

Yep! Now I'm just contemplating whether or not I want to pick up a new CPU/mobo (and sell the old ones back to my friend) to fully utilize my RAM and SSD. Just got a paycheck, so I probably wouldn't be hurting too much by splurging.

Leaning towards an i7-3770, but would the extra $40 for an i7-4770 warrant buying/future-proof my computer? I prefer to make upgrades as infrequent as possible.

Z87 chipset (4770K) will have more SATA III ports. If you're getting more SSD's in the future, might as well go for that.
