laptop probs

Hi my daughter brought here ( Lenovo 3000 n500 ) laptop down today as it would not boot into windows it goes past the Lenovo part then just goes to the black screen, she lost the original discs years ago so I put in a legal copy of win 7 32bit a while ago and it was working okay then this, I have tried booting up with the windows disc but it goes to starting windows and sits there, any help would be appreciated

did you activate widows? And was this install 30 days ago? If you install windows 7 and do not activate after 30 days it will just go black. You will have to reinstall and then activate

try another hard-drive in it, to install windows.. it may have a shagged drive so it ain't playing ball.

He managed to get to Windows loading screen, I assume BIOS is fine.

Back on topic:

Some came with the recovery partition; and, it has not been wiped it out, you may be able to use it.

This is from the manual:

Introducing Rescue and Recovery
If Windows is not running properly, use the Rescue and Recovery
workspace to help solve or identify your problem.
1 Turn off the computer, and then turn it on again.
2 When the Lenovo logo comes up, immediately press the Lenovo Care
button, F11, or Enter key.
3 After the Rescue and Recovery workspace opens, you can do the following:
• Rescue and Restore your files, folders, or backups.
• Configure your system settings and passwords.
• Communicate using the Internet and link to the support site.
• Troubleshoot and diagnose problems using diagnostics.

Restoring the factory contents from the service partition
1 If possible, save all your files and shut down your operating system.
2 Turn off the computer, and then turn it on again.
3 When the Lenovo logo comes up, immediately press the Lenovo Care
button, F11, or Enter key. The Rescue and Recovery workspace opens.
4 Click Full Restore and follow the instructions on the screen.

Test the memory with memtest and the hdd for bad sectors...

Well, boot from a usb or cd drive(hiren boot cd have all the tools you need for test)...

The first thing I would do is install Windows 7 again. If it won't...then I'd 'start' to look elsewhere.

try a linux live cd/dvd, if that works then its the hard drive, use linux to get the files from it and get a working in it.

It should use a SATA interface... see if you can plug into your desktop and run scans/tests on it.

Check it for baddies when you hook it up (if you can)... no telling where it has been surfing.

Hi I tried it in my tower in place of my second hard drive but the same happen and I couldn't get into it, so I think it is the hard drive and from what I see they aren't cheep

If you are in the UK, try CEX, they do some fairly cheap 2.5" sata HDD's

250gb is £22, 500gb is £40.

harddisk is dying or dead.

any 2.5" should do. go with hitachi. i have a 7year old hitachi that works and does not have a single error. its always been my os drive.
