Just curious if anyone of the forums had one of these in this review:

ASUS VG248QE - 144Hz vs 60Hz (DELL) in 240FPS Slow...

I'm looking for a 120HZ monitor and found out about this one with low latency etc, but the color seems to be way off and wondered if playing with the settings is enough to correct the quality and calibrate everything so it looks nice to the eye. Don't really care about light bleeding.

Thanks in advance. :)

I've got the VG278HE 120Hz monitor and it's super. Therefore, I'd expect the smaller version to be similar.

The monitor is very good for the money.

Its strenght is of course responsiveness and the ability to enable lightboost (requires nVidia hardware).

It is a step ahead of many 120hz monitors and you won't regret purchasing it if your main target is smooth gaming.
It shines on fast paced games like quake and alike ;)

The bad thing is that it uses a cheap TN panel which will have very bad viewing angles and color reproduction and no matter how much you try to make up for it with calibration it will still be years away from IPS technogy.

I only partially agree with that.

While it's true that it's got a TN panel with all the usual limitations, they have been greatly alleviated in the Asus, thus it's able to give a very nice picture indeed that can be seen quite a way off centre and still look good. I remember being surprised at how good it was when I got it.

Of course IPS would look much better still.

I've been eyeing a pair of the Asus 144Hz 24's for this past weak. The only reason I havn't pulled the trigger yet is I dont want to buy into the Asus PR crap wagon. I feel if I'm gonna drop $600 on a new display setup I should look at comparable screens and even nicer 30" options.

Still though 1ms at 144Hz should be buttery smooth for gaming. Even if they are TN panels, I'm sure you don't game with the monitor off to the side. IPS will be a brighter image with perhaps a bit better coloring, but the input lag can't be beat.

Not just that, but using the LightBoost strobe in 2D mode removes all motion blur, giving animation as good as a CRT, the gold standard. In fact, it will be better, because one couldn't normally run CRTs that fast. The effect is nothing short of jaw dropping: zero motion blur with a pin-sharp, hi res picture. Impossible on a CRT.

Also, I know that other monitors exist which have a strobing backlight that aren't tied to nvidia's proprietary solution and they're even better. I think Benq might do one, I'm not sure.

I am anti Asus. They fucked me (and a tonne of other customers TBH) over big time on my last build, and i will never purchase or reccomend another Asus product. They can take their marketing/products and shove it

I have used a samsung 2233rz which recently died. I still wanted a 120hz monitor so i checked out two options: The aforementioned 144hz asus panel and the benq XL2411T which recently came out. I decided to go with the benq because it is cheaper and has the same panel as the asus.

This monitor is tailored for fast paced fps games like quake world or quake 3/quake live (advanced movement + hitscan aiming). Out of the box the color calibration isn't that good therefore you need to manually adjust it. Even after adjusting the color quality is just average.

The monitor stand is really neat tho, it allows monitor rotation, height and tilt adjustment etc...

Regarding input lag and ghosting i can say that this monitor is the best LCD panel i have ever had (you need to properly configure the anti-ghosting and anti lag settings).

This monitor also has support for LightBoost strobe in 2D mode.

Yeah, I had one of those Samsungs: about the only thing it was really good for was displaying 3D, lol. Everything else was very average and the flashing power light in standby drove me nuts. In the dark, it was like a beacon!

I didn't know about that 2D strobing backlight on the benq and more importantly didn't know the benefits of it when I got my Asus, which is a really important feature and removes the proprietary tie from nvidia, so I'm starting to wish I'd gotten the benq instead, lol.

It is my contention that it's not so much 60Hz that's the problem, but rather the flaws of LCD itself. There are some fairly affordable 120Hz monitors, but I just can't wrap my head around the idea of an uber expensive GPU setup to maintain 120 or more frames and still have LCD limitations, esp those that come with TN panels.

It looks like the BenQ XL2411T might do, but it doesn't say so on the website so don't assume it. It supports nvidia LightBoost which uses a strobing backlight and requires the IR emitter to be connected to the PC in order to work properly.

The guy that runs www.blurbusters.com is an expert on strobing LCD monitors though, so I recommend checking out that site for a definitive answer.

It works with amd cards, but you still a nvidia gpu to enable it. Any time you cut the power of the monitor you will need to enable it again... It is not that practical for amd users atm, (at least it wasn't 2 months ago).

I use BenQ XL2411T and it's awesome. 120Hz works fine with DP and screen is beautiful. And quick panel is useful. I recommend this monitor.

Confirmed, yes, XL2411T has LightBoost.

The brand new XL2420TE is the newest BENQ model however.
Supports 144Hz, LightBoost, and a ZeroFlicker backlight (for non-LightBoost mode).

It is worth noting that the BENQ XL2411T uses the same panel as the ASUS VG248QE. Both are 144Hz. Historically, the XL2411T is cheaper in Europe and the VG248QE is cheaper in North America.

Just for curiosity, is there any IPS monitor which has 120 Hz or more refresh rate?

And I always got good service from Asus themselves. Yes the authorized service partners maybe bad but Asus themselves were always very good and fast. I recently had a 2 year old Asus M4A88TD M-EVO/USB3 motherboard dead. Yes the service center was taking more than 14 days. But I complained Asus and they agreed to give me a credit note. I got 87.6% of my cost price back(bought for Rupees 6150, got back Rupees 5390). I think its exceptional - having said it was 2 years old.
Its not Asus' fault. Here in India, they have already changed the service partner and is changing the distributor as well.

Not officially.
Unofficially, there are the overclockable monitors.

There's at least four different IPS / PLS models that can be overclocked up to 120Hz, as well as some speciality models, like the Catleap 2B or the Overlord Tempest, and the QNIX panels. They are listed within the 120Hz monitor list.
