Hello all. I am looking at laptops and notice that a good number of them come with the 740m but there is usually an option to go with 1GB, or 2GB. I am just wondering, which do I go with? Is it even worth (performance wise in games) to go with 2GB? I won't be using multiple monitors or anything. Would be paired with an Core i7-3537U. Games played would be LoL and maybe some COD and games of that nature.

Thanks all! Hope this is all the info anyone needs haha.

A more important question is whether it's the 128-bit or the 64-bit version (the latter being ~10% faster in raw GPU speed), and what kind of memory it's paired with. The chip supports both (G)DDR3 and GDDR5 (much faster, unless with 64-bit version). To try to clarify:

GTX 740M 64-bit + (GDDR3) = the slowest variant
GTX 740M 128-bit + (GDDR3) = a bit faster
GTX 740M 64-bit + (GDDR5) = about the same as above, somewhat faster at lower resolutions
GTX 740M 128-bit + (GDDR5) = the fastest variant

The 1GB version could very well carry GDDR5, while the 2GB is most likely (G)DDR3 (since 2 gigs of GDDR5 is very expensive).

How about linking to the specific laptops you were looking into?

Does the 64bit varieties also have their ROP count crippled? Notebookcheck isn't specific (seems somewhat of a lottery).

Nvidia started this annoying naming convention - having one name but multiple models - back with the hilariously convaluted GT555m. At least in this case the core GPU is the same (unlike the 555m).

Why can't the 740 just be x shaders, x core clock and x memory setup. If they want to fiddly about with say the memory rename it to be a 740m LE or something similar.

There are apparently two chip versions. GK107 and the new GK208, both with the same shaders, but 64-bit ver has half rops.
It's annoying the naming confusion Nvidia has in mobile chips

So should I just save the money and go for the cheaper one? I say that because if it is that confusing the difference between the two can't be THAT great. :/

The framerate will probably tank on a gt740m before you max the ram, so unless anymore knows more about the rops go for the cheaper one

Yeah, I'd say go with the cheapest one as well. It's only worth it to up to 750M, otherwise don't bother overpaying.
