Need a Router, got some advice for one?

I need a new router as my new apartment dos not come with one.

I have some specifications i need:

Gigabit wired network.
capable of handling lots of connections and high speed to the wan (have 25/25 fiber now, maybe 60/60 or higher in the future)
an good wireless part is nice.
I am planing to build a file server to stream music and video files from, also would be interesting if i could get access to the files over the Internet (my own cloud storage) would there be any thing the rooter should have to make this easier?
Would be nice to be able to put custom firmware on it, possibly to get some better functionality.
Price wise i am pretty flexible, but i don't want to overpay.

Have used a Linksys WRT54GL with dd-wrt before, but that one i had caped the wan speed at approximately 23 mbit (used to have a 100/100 line) and is only 802.11g.

Anybody got any recommendations?

Asus dark knight routers are pretty good IMO, but I haven't used them with custom firmware yet. A bit on the pricey side though

hmm, the AC version (RT-AC66U) is comparable to other ac ruters in my local shops.

I normally swear by Netgear routers, though I will admit older models have not been reliable AT ALL and died pretty quick (10 - 15 months) but they seem to be getting better. Right now I am using an AC router by them and I would easily recommend it to anyone who is looking to buy a fast, stable, oddly designed router (lol)

I've had this one before, it was actually pretty good. I loved it and had great speeds with it. Eventually though it did die (Thinking it was a shortage somewhere though, I got it working again though)

I used to have the wndr 3400, then the wndr 3700 now I am using the r6300 which is the ac router and I must say I have seen an increase in speeds and connectivity with each step up in router advancement. The only negative issue is the range on the 2.4ghz band on the r6300 but it is not as bad as people make it seem. The range is a little worse than the 3700 but the amount of devices that can/could be connected increases w/o any drop off in wireless service. I have 100MBPS connection so that definitely helps

i brought the Asus RT-N56U router myself i needed a new one with gigabit lan in, and this one also got gigabit ethernet, plus 2 usb ports, and wireless-n atm i got 40/40mbit fibernet and i got what i need and a little more, i tried two other Linksys router my isp got, the first E2500 did well, but lack of gigabit ports wasn't good enough, so i tried Linksys' EA2700 and it wasn't stable at all for me, i didn't get all my connection out of it, even firmware update of router and fiberbox didn't work.

only thing i miss with this Asus RT-N56U is that DD-WRT isn't supported, but Asus' own firmware is doing well.

hmm, lots of suggestions here, importing a router is prohibitively expensive so the Amped routers sort of get very expensive.

Cant find a TP-Link router with AC wireless in Norway

The Asus RT-AC66U and the Netgear R6300 are however available. and at ruffly the same price 1500 kr (250 usd) for the RT-AC66U vs 1400 kr (230 USD) for the R6300.

dd-wrt also works on the The RT-AC66U, not shure about the R6300

Seams like have found to good contenders, the RT-AC66U and the R6300. from the review i hav read the RT-AC66U is a little bit faster. Both has a option to give access to your files over the Internet from their USB ports. but (correct me if am wrong here) the RT-AC66U also supports this with a server conected to the network.

based on this i think i will go for the RT-AC66U, or is that an colossal mistake?

I'm not too sure about that last part but I'm pretty sure the r6300 also does the same. I believe it's through ReadyShare Cloud. I got my r6300 for 180 with a bonus Seagate 2 tb hdd.

I believe your right about the ReadyShare Cloud, all I'm saying is if I ever needed another router for any reason, the r6300 is my number one choice! I'd easily drop another $200 for one.
