I was pretty excited and tried it in 2011 upon release, but it was bland, with a lot of open space and nothing to do, though I did like the design of the world.

I was in the closed beta, but the installer would not work for me.

Too many FF online fans are willing to pay a monthly subscription for that to happen. You might get lucky to try with open beta though.

I'm still totally fine with paid subscription - however IF the game justifies it.
ARR is far from that.....far far from it.

LOTRO, RIFT, GW2, EverQuest and a few others are deserving of full time subscriptions.
Unfortunately, rather than taking the best of FFXIV 1.23 and making something for Square to proud of, they just rehashed the game to something more bland and 'appealing' to the masses.

Too many FF online fans are willing to pay a monthly subscription for that to happen. You might get lucky to try with open beta though.

While Final Fantasy fans buy-in, Square is selling out. This abuse of the franchise will come back to bite them. From a development standpoint, Yoshi really dropped the ball. Being an ex-EQ player, how he can be satisfied is dubious at best.

Still, fun game - just super let down.

Since we're doing FYIs, last phase/open beta is 17-19th of this month, with previous beta testers being eligible for 16-19th. Early access starts on 24th and streamlines into launch without interruption.
If you owned and registered FFXIV 1.0, then you get ARR for free(including subscription up till September 9th). The only legitimate reason for 1.0 owners to pre order ARR is if you want into early access on the 24th.

Oddly enough, none of those require full time subscriptions. With the recent Rift F2P success its hard for me to see any advantage in the p2p model. An in-game market done right should give similar revenue

They may have proven they can make F2P work for them; but that's more a testament to the games themselves rather than the quality of their F2P model. Let me also say that a poor F2P business model can really hurt a great game. Thus they need to work hand in hand.
The point was that each of those titles were at one time subscription based and/or they could be subscription based and stay successful(I'm also of full belief that RMT and coin farming/selling is something developers intentionally allow to happen, by implementing items and features into the game's core, that can then be abused by said farmers). The fact that those same items can be RMT in the in-game shops, only further exacerbates the whole issue.

ARR on the other hand could not be F2P, because they've intentionally squashed a lot of ways for companies and individuals to RMT - meaning they also do not want unnecessary attention drawn to the game, e.g. the riff raffs or the socialite rejects whom spend more time standing around 'afk'ng and telling your mom jokes at a city hub, all the while hoping strangers on the internet are jealous of their 'ph4t l3wz'; as opposed to actually playing the game that the developers spent years designing. As much as the FF crowd are often anime loving, furry fisting freaks(westerners) and as bizarre as some asians have shown themselves to be, the developers seem like normal people investing time into a project they believe in.

Pretty sure GW2 has never required a subscription to play. In Everquest's day there was literally no other model out there. EQ Next will be either F2P or B2P, not subscription based.

That analogy is spot on... people might find that rude but what newconroer says is true. After playing Guild Wars 2, I don't think I can handle another free to play game. The developers just can't keep up with the amount of bugs/exploits that are just too readily available with free to play games.

Pretty sure GW2 has never required a subscription to play. In Everquest's day there was literally no other model out there. EQ Next will be either F2P or B2P, not subscription based.

Yeah, GW2 requires a one time purchase. The full priced purchase gets you an account, 5 character slots, a bank with one tab, and access to the entire world. You can purchase a deluxe edition, and for ten dollars more get a few extra things (skills and a few odds and ends).

Assuming you didn't want to spend another penny, you could spend a few months accumulating gold in game, and convert it into gems (the paid currency). You can then use gems to purchase any of the paid content. Because of the time associated with amassing gold, people can spend real money (in-leau of paid subscriptions), and the paid content is unlocked. As none of the paid content influences the balance of the game, the guy who spends $20 a month isn't objectively more powerful than the person who doesn't spend a dime.

Having experienced this working, I can't see why a subscription model is needed. I gladly spent $10 on convenience items every few months, but never feel like it's something foisted upon me. There's no reason other MMOs can't use this model. FF requiring ARR shows that Squareenix has lost sight of how to tap a player base. It's depressing to think that such a staple of my childhood has fallen so far. Hopefully 15 will finally demonstrate some sense. I'm not holding my breath, but hopefully.

I thought I'd chime in. I'm really enjoying this game. It has a lot of meat to it compared to MMO's I've played in the past and it looks beautiful! I find myself just looking at everything around me and thinking' dayum this looks good.

Also it runs good too. Due to all their server issues (not allowing people to join a butt load of servers due to capacity issues, all NA servers being maxed out and I can never get in one) I had to join a EU server which so far has worked well for me. In game everything seems to be working right and smoothly too. No crashes, no major bugs so far for me anyway. Sounds are fantastic, visuals are beautiful, animations are great. Tons of details, tons of content, tons of lore, and many new and or improved gameplay mechanics coompared to the MMO's of my past. Lots of little things that make me happy.

I'm a FF fan but I'm not a huge fan so somethings I don't like that I have to deal with are some of the goofy japanse style creatures like those little guys that are white with the red ball over their heads....stupid. But I can deal with it. It's like any other FF game but better and its LOADS and LOADS better than their last MMO launch. ARR is turning out to be a fine game and something I plan to spend many hours in.

I have several characters right now but my main is a Conjurer L10 On Phoenix EU
