Hello everybody, none of you will probably remember me at all. But I used to be quite active on the forum around 2009-2010 but then stopped completely cause of university ect. But I'm back and need advice on hardware as I'm completely clueless what's good or not anymore xD.

Anyway my specs are: 8GB DDR2 Corsair Dominator 800MHz, AMD Phenom 965 x4 3.6 GHz, Sapphire 4890 Vapor-X, OCZ 600W StealthXtreme, 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3, 2x LG Blu Ray Drive, ASUS M4N72-E Mobo and a Samsung SyncMaster P2070.

I found my sapphire 5870 vapor-x in the attic in brand new condition used only once and never put in again because I remembered my PC just shut down randomly sometimes completely from it. I think it was because it was my PSU not good enough? (if anyone could enlighten me on the situation would be great) But anyway, I know there isn't much I can upgrade as my mobo is very dated. But I only want to use this for casual gaming and stuff until I get some money together to get myself an Haswel build. Will this rig be suitable for most games today at like high settings? If I was to install my 5870 in will it bottleneck my 965 at all? And should i buy a new PSU so it will power everything all good?

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
4890 was a beast a few years ago, but it will likely struggle on high at 1080p with today's games. Some visual sacrifices will have to be made. The 5870 will fare better, but still wont br able to crank the settings on a lot of modern games.

PSU us MEH. Its only recently, IIRC, OCZ made some decent PSUs. I would def. try thte 5870 again though. :)

Yeah I remember when I could crank everything to max settings back in the days with the 4890 ;) and what PSU do you recommend? Is Corsair PSU any good? Like the TX series. My screen resolution is 1600x900 will the 5870 be good enough for games on that type of resolution?

A corsair TX will be fine, and at 1600x900 the 5870 should be fine at pretty high settings.

Welcome back too :)

the Cpu is fine for me, not the gpu and the ram/mobo (a 965 with DDR2 sob sob ... poor 965 ;) )

also you can find (not 100% sure of it but anyway) some good deals on "recent" hardware just like i did with my Asus Crosshair IV Formula, the 8gig DDR3 corsair vengeance LP 1866mhz and the 7870 for those three parts i never paid more than 350$ (keep in mind i talk about Mobo+ram dual kit+gpu) :)

When you get a new setup, sell that 8gb of ddr2, it is quite expensive now.

Sorry bud, but i don't remember you

and im american ... damn i didnt know! ps: im swiss ... and i look on Ricardo.ch and Ebay :D

What I would do if you wanted is to just pickup a used I5-2500K and a Z77 board then turn around and sell the AMD combo.

and why since 955/965 BE works just fine and are on par with I5-2500K... at last a used ivy ... oh wait ... IB seller think they have gold in the hands and overprice like hell (well even SB second hand seller do ... )

oh wait its the PHII X6 1090T or the FX-6300 who is on par with 2500K the 965 is not to far from it ... tsssk

No worries! I just remembered you helped me out a few times when I had problems with my rig back in the day... And I know wtf, looked on ebay and stuff and DDR2 is more expensive than DDR3? Especially the corsair dominator. Why is it?

I could do, but I'll probably just stick with what I have until I can make myself a brand new rig that will be uber powerful. I've recently just found a job and will be working quite a few hours a week so it should all be good ^_^

I dont know about anyone else, but the 965 is still an awesome processor, I'm still running a Phenom in the secondary rig, and it never fails at LAN parties when it gets fed SLI cards.
Tell me if I'm wrong but I dont see a budget?

Ummm no not quite, I went from a 3.9GHz OCed 965BE to a I7-920 OCed to 4Ghz and it was pretty much a night and day difference in games.

Yea, you can't compare a 965BE to a i7 2500. I've got 2x i5 2500 crunching at 4.5ghz on air. :toast: I was able to get one of them up to 4.7ghz but lowered it back down to 4.5ghz because of temps. :toast:

Gaming I seen boosts as high as a 20FPS gain going from the 965 to an I7-920 then even more going to a 2600K. The I7-920 took the gaming torch and it has been carried by intel for a while now but that is not saying the 8150/8350 is a bad chip cause it does good in gaming but still doesn't compare to the 965 he has.

Benchmark Scores bench...mark? i do leave mark on bench sometime, to remember which one is the most comfortable. :o
Nope because we posted about the same time.

oki doki i see ;) im running a 955BE at 4.2 if i won the auction i was aiming for i would have a i7-2600K and the mobo that goes with but since its intel, other bidders went overboard :D

still i run all the games i play all at max with convenable fps (49-75 average 65, i never use Vsync except on some heavy games to stabilize frames drop)

Your PC isn't that bad, the 4890 sticks out like a sore thumb.

The 5870 isn't a bad card, still as powerful as some midrange cards today.

On a 1600x900 resolution there is no real reason to upgrade from a 5870 + Phenom II X4.

Your best bet is to find out what's causing the restarts, format your HDD, if the restarts persist buy a new PSU and take it from there.

I haven't upgraded since 2009/2010 either, been running this Athlon II X4 and 5850 CF ever since, plays Crysis 2 full settings with texture mods, Max Payne 3, BF3, anything I throw at it. I'm still looking for an excuse to upgrade, until then my money stays in my wallet.

Yeah true, and 5850 CF is beastly even for today's standards! I'm pretty sure future games like battlefield 4 will still run smooth on this rig with that kind of resolution ^_^
