Undecided between 2 SSHDs

Hello,
I have a new notebook, which has a 120GB SSD which I use for my personal OS, plus a 750GB 7200rpm with a 300GB school partition.
One thing I immediately noticed, is that the HDD is really slow. Maybe I'm just used to SSD speeds, but it's kinda sad that I have to work on such a slow machine (considering I have a pretty decent notebook, ASUS G55VW).
So, I am searching for a fast SSHD (since SSDs are still too expensive, I need 300GB of space), and I didn't find many. I am undecided between the Seagate Seagate Momentus XT 750, which is 7200rpm, and the Seagate 1TB Solid State Hybrid Drive which runs at 5400rpm only.
Now, I don't mind the extra 250GB since I'm probably not going to use it anyways. I was wondering, which one of the two is going to be faster? I know the first one is 7200rpm, but I have heard that the 5400rpm one has updated algorithms and is the second generation.
I am going to use it mostly to program and use softwares like Visual Studio and such.

You won't notice any difference between a new HDD and the one you have (especially if its a secondary drive), Now for a non SSD the fastest available is the WD Scorpio Black, but unless there is something wrong with your drive you have, you won't notice the difference. It's simply because your SSD is so fast.

Good Luck

Maybe I didn't mention it, but I have a 300GB school partition with Windows 7 that I'm going to use for programming and virtual machines, that's why I'd like to buy something faster.

There are two SSHDs you should be looking at if your considering the technology. The Toshiba 500GB or 1TB and the Seagate 500GB SSHD. The Toshiba drives have very aggressive caching algorithms geared towards small file operations, like running an operating system. The Seagate drive is a little lack on the aggressiveness and does much better with applications than it does with an OS. Either way, if this is a backup drive or secondary drive that the OS does not reside on,im not sure you will find any benefit in using SSHD technology over a standard HDD.

It might be in sequential read/writes, but nothing can compare to an SSD/SSHD when it comes down to OS boot times and overall speed, right?

I have a 300GB W7 partition, so yeah I do have an OS on it. I read some reviews about the Toshiba one, but it doesn't seem that fast (got a 3/5 on CNET, but a 96% on TweakTown).
If it comes to Switzerland at a low price, I might consider it though.
EDIT: Also, the Toshiba one goes up to 500GB, which may be a little too low for me.

I'd say go for the 1TB, as you mentioned it is 5.4k 1TB for the added space and newer tech. Even though a slower spindle speed these are replacing the older momentus lineup. 250GB more storage, newer tech and hybrid drive caching, gets my vote :toast:

The 1TB is definitely the fastest feeling hard drive out there right now when it comes to mechanical drives. I'm using the 1TB drive as my main drive in my PC right now. The WD Black might test faster with sequential transfer speeds, but when it comes to actual making the system faster the Seagate SSHD feels much faster. Boot times are close to what the SSDs I've tested were, and my common programs(photoshop, steam, MSI Afterburner, Chrome) all start instantly when I click on them.

The Toshiba drive goes up to 1TB,but may not be available retail channels quite yet. MSRP is $199 which does price it out of the retail market.

I can find it for 119CHF.-, which is close to 135-140$, so that would be an interesting choice at that price. I'd get 250GB of extra space (even though it goes at 5400rpm). My 7200rrm notebook hdd is not fast anyways, tops out at about 80MB/s sequential reads.

Yes, the drive is 5400RPM but once that cache adapts to your workload you will be pleasantly surprised at how snappy the drive is.
