Should I RMA?

Hey guys quick question for you with a bit of a back story.

Ive been getting some BSOD's lately via ntoskrnl.exe, win32k.sys, and nvlddmkm.sys. While going through the process to see if it has been ram related or maybe my SSD taking a shit, I downloaded crystaldisk info to check the SMART status of all my drives.

My SSD came back Good 100%, my 2x250GB drives (not in RAID) are in "Good" condition. However, the 2TB HDD that I bought last year is under "Caution" status and I havent the foggiest idea how long it's been like that. I have attached a screenshot to show what is going on with the drive.

My main thought is, should I be concerned? Should I contact WD and have them send me a replacement?

When in doubt, RMA.
Email WD support and send them the Smart Data details, asking them if you are within rights to RMA the drive.

Well there goes the advanced RMA option. They want $125. I paid $97 for it on newegg back in 8/2012.

They apparently want money for an advanced RMA so they dont get screwed over. And yes its under warranty until next year some time.

Pay money for an RMA? UNDER WARRANTY???!!!
Remind me never to buy a WD HDD.

I've RMA'd hundreds of drives, each and every time a new HDD has been sent (for free) and the faulty HDD gets picked up at the same time by that courier.

I may be wrong, but I believe these problems arise when one doesn't register a hard drive on their website after one buys it.

I registered it on the website before hand. I dont have another hard drive to back up the 800GB of crap that I have on it though so I cant send this one in before I get a replacement.

Last time I ARMA'd a WD drive it only cost me $20. Not sure why this is costing me over $100 more.

It is pretty easy here fellas.

If you want an advanced RMA they want to cover the product they send out, no matter the cost versus what is paid at an etailer. They just want a credit card number they will charge the product for. Once you send the product back, the charge is removed and you go on with your life as you wanted it to happen.

Either pay up front or find another way to back up your data. A lot of companies wont even offer advanced RMAs, be grateful they even offered you the solution you need!

I have done this with many companies, and it has been nothing but good experiences. While the price may be shocking, if you have the access to do it, go for it!

Yea, that's nothing new, if indeed that's what he's talking about... no one cross ships these days without a credit card charge as collateral.

Right I get that. But $125? That's mroe than what I paid for the drive. My last ARMA was $20 with them a few years back.

policy may have changed, or that drive is more expensive for them somehow. Either way you can either pay it and be happy, or send yours in and wait a couple weeks, and also buying another drive before to even move the data.

Does it matter if the cost is a $20 charge or a $125 charge when you get it back? The only way you will lose out is if you took over a month to return their drive.

I get that, but in reality, as long as you dont screw up your end of the RMA the cost is irrelevant, as you are never actually charged on the bills for that transaction. I know its a bit wild, but it could be $500 and you still wont feel any effects as long as you get the data off and the drive back in a timely manner.

Sorry for my blunt realist attitude, but as long as the unemployed guy has a credit card that isn't already maxed out, this honestly is just a security deposit that you have to ruin things not to get it back.

Some good advice their sneeky. I can understand why people may be a bit leery of putting themselves in the firing line should something go wrong, though. But there's no getting round it if the RMA exchange is to be made.

Yea, it doesn't seem fair. If you can live without the drive for a few weeks, can you do an "unadvanced" RMA and have them ship a new one once they've recieved and verified your old one?

Just pay the $125, you get it back anyway, this way you can back up all your shit and not have to worry, the extra cost is probably shipping cost, did you really think they are going to send you a brand new drive with no collateral ??,

I expect and recieve that exact service on a weekly basis when RMA'ing drives. Either the US has retarded RMA, or UK hard drive warranty services are exceedingly good. Always recieved a new drive and had the old drive picked up at the same time, usually next day or 2 days, and they pay for postage.
