DDR2 timings with P965 NB

Hi Guys,

I have an Asus P5B-E with Intel E8400.

My DDR2 is:
2x1GB Kingston PC8500 5,5,5,15
2x1GB OCZ PC8500 5,5,5,15

I can't set manually these timings without Memtest86+ errors for all the frequencies (333 or 416) and voltages.

In auto, the BIOS choose 5,6,6,15 and I have no error @416MHz 1.8V.

Who could explain where these timings are coming from, because not into the SPD?

More generally, who could explain why I cant' set the normal timings?

;)

It could be the degradation of the RAM modules. Or, the two different sticks of RAM could have different IC's even though they have similar specifications causing instability with stock timings.

You're best bet is to find a matching stick of RAM for one of your sticks.

The BIOS timings are a safety bootable default to find bootable stability. What are the voltage specs for those speeds and timings on each stick of ram? Is one 2.1v? Another 1.9v? Stuff like that is important with memory as well. Does Memtest fail at the bootable defaults? Have you tried one stick at a time to see if you can do PC8500 (DDR 1066 iirc?) at 5-5-5-15 timings?

I had the Asus P5B Deluxe, was a good motherboard, but I eventually had memory stability issues between it and my buffalo firestix.

There is a chance of degradation as well, but I'm wondering if one setting is good for one stick but not the other one, meaning you'll need to run the looser timings (6-6-6-18) to find stability.

I tested successfully each couple @1066MHz 2.1V 5-5-5-15 on a P5Q Deluxe (in the past).

The MB seems responsible because each couple has separately the same problem...

I'd try to bump the ram voltage up a little bit, and those older Intel platforms doesn't like very much four memory sticks, so maybe some voltage boost to northbridge would also be necessary.

As I said, neither RAM frequency nor voltage helps for 2 or 4 sticks.
The only solution is to leave the BIOS set 5-6-6-15, but I'd like to understand where the 6 is coming from!?
