Ram frequency is a joke?

I'd be interested to see if the AI / simulation speed scales with RAM speed on a game like Sins of a Solar Empire, or Supreme Commander.

Not at this point, really. Games aren't really that ram-intensive, since there are limits to the amount of ram that most apps can use. That doesn't mean that high-speed ram is useless...simply put, it's not utilized enough by standard apps for the real benefits to be noticed.

SO yeah, unless you use a RamDisk, you'll not really notice much, but fortunately, most high-end motherboards today come with free RamDisk software. I asked many memory makers for high-capacity kits so I could show how using a ramdisk works, and what it can and cannot offer, but no one was interested.

I have TONNES of high-end ram....all of which in runs JEDEC specs, not XMP, since it doesn't account for a noticible difference for me in my day-to-day uses. High-speed ram with multi-GPU systems can help get rid of stutter, however, and that's where it really becomes useful for me, but since most users don't run multiple VGAs, most users don't have need for it.

1333 MHz C9 to 1600 MHz C6 gives me a 25% increase in memory bandwidth, but nearly 0% increase in performance on X79 with 3960X. Quad-channel is not needed for daily uses, so the added bandwidth is not beneficial. Windows EI gives higher points for MORE ram because having too little ram is more counter-productive to performance than having ram that is too slow.

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
You're talking bottlenecks now. There are clearly applications that gain from faster bandwidth, those that have a lot of CPU -> Memory I/O

AutoCAD is a great example. First load, it grabs all program code from the HDD and puts into memory... slow. Close AutoCAD... it keeps a sizeable chunk of code in memory for subsequent loads. The second time you load AutoCAD, it's roughly 1/4 of the time to load. Most code is coming from memory, not the HDD. Faster memory = faster load the 2nd time.

With the logic you're using, an SSD wouldn't be any faster than a HDD.
I was just trying to explain what you asked... and I have already acknowledged there are a rare few applications that can utilize faster ram. Not sure why you keep beating on that point.

The AutoCAD thing you are talking about is Windows Superfetch doing its thing, sure.

My logic does not translate to HDD to SSD quite simply because in EVERY system the HDD/SSD is the bottleneck or slowest part of the system. The 'bandwidth' on a HDD/SSD is constantly saturated filled as the CPU can easily push the meager (compared to RAM) speeds they can achieve.

AFAIK, it's built into AutoCAD. They originally called it "Autodesk application accelerator".

Anyway, this discussion doth grow tiresome.

If I'm not mistaken RAM speed matters more in database applications.

Will it improve scaling with hyperthreading on i5 vs i7s?

Also, what linus fails to mention is with base clock overclocking you want ram that can tolerate high speeds, especially if you lack memory multiplier dividers. This was an issue with the i7-9xx with locked multis.

Ram speed doesnt matter unless you use an APU..

Sorry the $300 you spent on "gaming" ram is a huge waste of money... looks good with your $90 titanium plated hdmi cables tho

I like Monster Cables also.

Love the CEA, if there is another way to scam the American public, they will find a way.

I've heard titanium cables are good for a 20% boost to FPS.

Yea most high speed memory is only worth it for benchmarks however here and there a few titles benefit.

Total War being a series that does.

Tight timings and high clocks only matter to benchers. For everyone else, some mid way clock and timings and as big capacity as possible. That helps a lot more than bandwidth and low timings...

My 8G of DDR2 1066 5-5-5-15 has been doing me well for ages now. Should I upgrade my board to get DDR3 support guys? :pimp:
