not at all ,is steam os going t0o be big ps4 or xbone, way too early to know who wins or not

in win 7 paints where it is the menu, in win8 with no start added< paint isnt anywhere useful to you drop a shortcut, not impossible but a bit shit, still win 8 lovin it and the oc issues i had before are not here with 1 gpu etc:D

no ones even seen it for themselves yet and im amused at the death toll's peeps funny

I don't want a winner we want there be always competition to make people like MS get of their asses and not just sit around like INTEL are with their cpu's.

Guys, read please. Mantle won't run on the Xbox because from a technical perspective, it would not make sense to do so. This is nothing "political" or so.

Yep. Sure makes sense to move to AMD only Mantle API. Existing OpenGL extensions offer similar already. For BOTH manufacturers.

Yet I keep looking for that OpenGL Battlefield 4 announcement and can't seem to find it!
And again, I have to ask, where on earth those it say Mantle is AMD exclusive?

Finally someone with some common sense and no reading comprehension problems...

On the AMD site ?
From a mile-high perspective, Mantle is the harmony of three essential ingredients:
1.A thin driver within the AMD Catalyst™ software suite that allows applications to speak directly to the Graphics Core Next architecture.
2.A Graphics Core Next-enabled graphics chip, such as the AMD Radeon™ R9 Series, R7 Series or HD 7000 Series GPUs.
3.And an application or game engine written to utilize the Mantle SDK, such as the Frostbite™ 3 engine within Battlefield™ 4.
or the Hardware France interview with Raja Koduri and Chris Hook?
There were reports yesterday about Mantle being an open standard ???
Chris Hook, Head of PR - Mantle is an industry standard.
So Mantle is not an open standard ? Let's say some IHVs [Independent Hardware Vendors] want to write a Mantle backend/driver, what would be the requirements for them ?
RK - Mantle is in a very early stage, it's the first disclosure about it we've done, we have the first proof point using that, that is going to ship into some products. We are open to many possibilities with Mantle. We are open to being open; we are open to being standard. How it evolves if our competitor approaches us and says "we want to be compatible with Mantle" ? ... That's a conversation we are not going to shut down.
Chris Hook, Head of PR - There aren't many companies of course... Because of GCN they don't have Mantle capable hardware today…
Basically you're good to go...so long as you have the right to lawfully use GCN IP.
There's also a quote from Matt Skynner floating around that AMD aren't looking to open Mantle to other IHV's for another year at least. Can't be bothered Googling it.

So you give a straight answer... then take it back... Okay...

Anyway, here's a interesting bit (and mostly, why I will always have a soft spot for AMD):
Essential principle #4: Don’t break games

While Mantle is uniquely optimized for PCs containing the Graphics Core Next architecture, we recognize there other architectures in the market. Gamers with these architectures deserve good gameplay just as much as anyone else, and we have t designed Mantle in a way that respects their right to game well.

Developers using Mantle are free to implement whatever optimizations they choose to maximize the performance of their game for everyone. Now, more than ever, Mantle assures that the choices a developer must make to optimize their game code for the leading PC graphics architectures are non-interfering choices.

Mantle will be dead and gone within a year..

By that logic, so will BF4... oh, wait, it can't be... It'll be one of the most played games in the following 2 years minimum.

Not really. It's actually pretty straightforward.
1.
Mantle requires GCN architecture
AMD is the only IHV with GCN

1a.
Mantle is AMD exclusive.
AMD have stated that any IHV wanting to develop a wrapper for their own microarch has to run it by AMD first.
AMD's Matt Skynner has stated that Mantle will remain AMD exclusive for at least a year.

PCGH asked Raja Koduri about Mantle and its "openess". He replied that AMD doesn't see Mantle as an open standard like OpenCL or OpenGL.

So basically, AMD are saying that Mantle isn't closed so long as you have AMD architecture...which is another way of saying F%@k off Intel, Nvidia, and PowerVR.

Ah well, a big "whatever" to the details for the time being.

Let's see it in action first.

So i'm sure this has been asked but i didn't find it.

Would it be wise to purchase an AMD card, R9 280x for example, over say a GTX 760/70? will all games using mantle run better on AMD than Nvidia? or is that still in the air?

No doubt games that actually support AMD's proprietary technology will run better on their GCN based cards.

The amount of games that will actually support Mantle however remains to be seen, depends on how deep AMD's pockets are.

Wait untill AMD APU13 or "AMD Developer Summit 2013" or whatever you want to call it, should start on the 10th of next month I think. AMD said they will be revealing more details about Mantle there, as well as new partners/game engines supporting/planning support for it, and maybe even a demonstration or two. Also, obviously, new info on Kaveri and on their x86 side in general, should be there for sure.

Either way, unless you have brand preferences (and that's kind of sad, most of the time), you should get a R9 280X anyway, since it's better way better value than, say GTX 770, to begin with, Mantle or not. --my 2c.

thanks fella's, i'm not upgrading now, maybe in a few months, but i was just curious if any info had come about to support that mantle will run better.

I've had nvidia my past 3 cards, before that i had an HD 4870 which ran great at the time, so i think i might go AMD this round. I like to switch it up :). Plus AMD drivers may be better since there's a lot of developers surrounded by AMD hardware.

If I had a fireplace, I'd totally put my AMD card on the mantle and take a picture of it. The internet would love me for it.
