I appreciate your loyalty to TPU and they are fantastic reviews, but there are at least 2 others I can think of that do darn good job too. Guru3D and techreport. Reading one review is just narrow.

Noise? What did you expect from a cheap $550 card? If you want silence it'll cost you $1000!

True enough but Haswell only throttles when it hits those temps in extreme situations aka Prime 95 / OCCT / IBT etc

Its now common knowledge that 290X could perform far better with aftermarket cooling.

Many sites show average clock speeds at 880-920 Mhz and over longer periods of time performance suffers by 2-4 fps.

Stock cooler = forget about overclocking.

Once aftermarket cooled cards are available 290X will shine right now its more of a lame duck. Lots of potential thats currently wasted unless you slap a water block on it oh wait they are all sold out of said blocks.

The sooner ASUS / MSI / Sapphire etc release their Direct Cu II / Twin Frozr / Vapor X series of these cards the better.

LOL, don't teach me about decibel scale. And I'm talking with the guy who claim that 40db (290x quiet mode) - 38db (Titan) is far more bigger than 2db.

So your telling me you buy computing products so they can not perform at the level they should?

Since when did we reward downclocking during are gameplay? Since when did enthusiasts find it okay to lose performance thats there not because of a bad product but because of a shitty design for a cooler?

Oh look it does 50 fps in x game oh wait if I play for more than 5 minutes its really just 45 fps and has the exact same performance as the 780 yet is loud as fuck and is a space heater. Since when did this = AWESOME

AMD dropped the ball with the cooler. Just like they did with the 6970 reference design that they had to shave off the plastic around the PCIe power plugs to make it fit.

As it stands if the card ran at 1000 MHz performance could be 5-9% better than it is instead downclocking during gameplay is now an awesome feature that means lower performance on reference cards something that wont exist for owners with water cooled cards. Everyone else gets to wait 3 months for a proper 290x.

people bitched about the GTX 480 being a space heater etc yet it stomped AMD into the ground performance wise. Now AMD's GPU is much the same way but its okay? yea no people need to stop drinking the vendor kool aide

290X in quiet mode spends most of its gaming time in 650-850 MHz region, and it still beats 780 with a far margin in most games.

Thanks for the review, W1zzard. On the second page of the review, you mentioned the following:

Is there actually an advantage to using PCIE3 (as opposed to PCIE2) with an AMD R9 290X? Or is it a similar situation to every video card before it (i.e. minimal improvement)?

i'm looking at doing a PCIe scaling article with 290X in the next weeks.

is the best data I can provide at this time

That being said I would water cool a 290 if I had one. So it is not an issue, or concern to me. That does not change that your argumentative logic is dismissive of facts, and therefore biased.

where is this "far margin" you are talking about? are we even looking at the same graph?
at 4 times the amount of noise and 25% more power draw, the 290x is about 1% faster than 780gtx in silent mode at 1920x1080, and 4% more in 2560x1600

I really feel sorry for your math teacher, mate

I feel the same for your science teacher

arguing my point? good work on that one :toast:

SO whenever you jump in your car to go to work in the morning you turn on all of your tuners to max and then press the peddle to the floor until you get to work?

Thats the way we do it here mate.

Love how you pick one, completely non relevant example to suit your purpose too, unfortunately that's not how gfx cards work and I can do the same easily, shall we?

So your partner snores, not often mind you, perhaps only for 10 minutes as she goes to sleep, most of the time she's breathing it's quiet, not annoying at all, but when she snores it grinds your gears, please don't make me connect the dots.

Easy to make an example that fits what I want too mate.

Why is everyone so stuck up on idle, the thing is loud under load, and the difference grows to insane in uber mode. It is louder across the board, period.

This is my only point.

Yeah your situation being described is like comparing a Nascar race to a highway joyride.
