R9 290x started good then lost performance??

So i bought the R9 290x.

I took out my HD 7950 and installed the new card, deleted old drivers etc and installed the new ones. It ran like a dream, amazing frame rates in BF3 at max with AA 120fps+ also ran hitman absolution bench maxed at 80fps average.

But it had been a while since i had formatted my pc so i thought id give windows 8.1 a shot (was on 7)!!

So installed 8.1, updated everything installed mobo drivers even updated my bios (which i think may be the problem) and my fps had dropped dramatically like 45-55 fps average in BF3 hit man 39fps.

I put it down to windows 8.1 so reinstalled win 7 and STILL the same problems...

I just DONT understand, the only thing i can think of is the bios!

im so confused right now!

PLEASE HELP!

The first time you tried it, when it ran like a dream, did you play games for more than 2 minutes? Or did you just run a 1 - 2 minute benchmark?
Thermal throttling seems the most likely.
Also. Why in gods green earth would you flash the BIOS of a brand new card.

if you think its bios how about considering flashing back to original your bios?

and it will be more helpful if you can fill up your system specs....

post the rest of your system specs

I didn't flash the bios of my card just the mono, i had been lazy keeping everything uptodate but obv when you get a new toy, you want everything to be perfect hence wanting to have my system as fresh as possible.

Thermal throttling? ill have to google this.

Thanks for super quick responses!

Was the PC running fine with the old motherboard BIOS? If so you should leave it. Only update the BIOS on the motherboard if you have an issue.

im basically back to where i was when it was all running sweet. i mean its still running sweet but no as good as it was yesterday. maybe i just need to wait for the drivers to get better, as we all know, amd arnt the best at driver updates :D

im interested in this thermal throttling tho? I mean this is a hot ass card but my cooling is bloody good so i wouldnt consider this a problem but might be worth a look

Look at your 290X temps from GPU-z the time you play for over 5-10 mins. If you see that core frequency drops as temp rises, that is the couse of the FPS drop.

Can't think it would be throttling if it was fine a few days ago, maybe something as simple as a missed setting in Bios as updating it would have reset to stock values, check GPU-Z for the obvious PCI-E speeds etc I am sure you would have the Bios set on the correct PCI-E slot AND your not running it in a mobo x4 or something.

Was it night time when you got better FPS? If it was night and cooler ambient temps you mite have gotten better scores than you would in the day time.

I've just reinstalled my OS because I messed up CCC and couldn't fix it. I just used Asus GPUTweak until new OS and got CCC back. I noticed it was easier to get better FPS with gputweak so now I disable CCC in task manager and just use gputeak.

That's a good point you make. I'd so hate to have a graphics card who's performance varied with the temperature of the room and the time of day, because it runs so hot. Sheesh. My GTX 590 was like that. Notice that I replaced it. ;)

How about instead of saying that you have a lot of fans, you actually tell us what the GPU is running at. If it's pegging out at 95*C, it's going to throttle.

thanks for the snotty comment.

It goes up to 94c but reading the reviews etc this is totally normal for this card

It is normal, but if you read those reviews, they clearly show that 95*C is where the card begins to throttle back.

I also take pride in my douche-like comments. :toast:

Although, in my own defense, I'm not the only person who has said that temperatures could be the cause:

yeh i do agree with you about the temps BUT, the FPS would at least start high n tail off, not be 90fps or less straight off the bat!
