Many games do it this way, and there are some games like Diablo 3 where you end up getting shot by invisible enemies because of the narrower FOV *that you can do nothing about*.

And you will get shot from "above" or "below" with a 16:9.

Seriously, I don't get why is this issue so important (not even an issue IMO it's just something you get used to).
You're already using a 16:10 monitor so why change the ratio if it's working nicely?
I've tried switching to a 16:9 myself but for me (and a lot of other people) it's horrible. So that's why you should first try and see if it's working better for you, there is a reason why 16:9 isn't used for everything - it was meant for HDTV not computer monitors.

Actually you wouldn't get shot from below or above because the height of the FOV is fixed across all aspect ratios and it is only the width that changes.

I get your point though. Maybe I can talk my boss into lending me one of our many test monitors to see if 16:9 would work for me at home and find the proper solution for me this way.

Here is am image that demonstrates the problem and why I still talk about letterboxing:

I'd have to run 16:9 letterboxed on a 16:10 screen to get the correct FOV. This is the kind of behaviour that is giving me a hard time deciding. Many games do it this way, and there are some games like Diablo 3 where you end up getting shot by invisible enemies because of the narrower FOV *that you can do nothing about*.

You have a point about the old resolutions though.

As I wrote earlier, my budget is ~400$. I want to stay at 24" or below because my desk isn't very deep and I have to sit relatively close to the monitor. Pixel density also never hurts. Image quality is very important for me.

Currently, I am torn betwen the Eizo Foris FS2333 (23", 1.920x1.080) and the Asus PB248Q (24", 1.920x1.080). Both are high quality IPS panels. The Eizo is marketed towards gamers, has no blurring and almost no input lag, whereas the Asus is for graphical work mostly, but according to PRAD will do well in games.

I have to admit that I am mostly indifferent to my FPS once I am past 30-40 fps. Anything more is purely optional for me. I personally prefer all eye candy @ 40 fps to less eye candy at 120fps. Besides, the ability to run games at 120fps in high resolutions comes at quite a price, gpu-wise.
I would take the Asus PB248Q without batting an eye. I don't know about that Asus but my Samsung T240 can run 1080 and it effectively turns into that Eizo Foris FS2333 23" screen (little black bars on the top & bottom). Games are none the wiser so you aren't sacrificing anything with 1920x1200. 6ms is good performance too and shoundn't have problems with games.

I guess it comes down to deciding if I can live with the letterboxing. Well... decisions, decisions. Thanks for your input everyone, but it seems that I will have to do some testing on my own before I can decide.

Btw, I corrected a typo in my previous post. The Asus is 1.920x1.200.

Get the first one, 1080p is more popular than that 1200p that nobody cares about.

Here's a picture of my T240 letterboxing 1920x1080 (if you care):
The monitor is 24". When it is letterboxing 1920x1080, it effectively becomes a 23" with a taller frame. XD

A quick update: I had a 24" 16:9 for a week and it left me with mixed feelings. It is somewhat nice for peripheral vision, which makes it a little more immersive, but I always found it lacking in vertical space. I mostly play WoW on a somewhat high level, and the extra width did nothing to help with keeping track of many things at once since it required me to move my head more. The FOV does not help there, and I did not like that.

That being said I will go for the 16:10. Thanks for your help everyone.
