Rather than spending the entire £1000.

It would make more sense to just upgrade the GPU (R9 280) and CPU to an i5/i7. This could be done on £300.

Save the rest of the money on Xmas or put it in savings for a rainy day.

Dammit, you've beaten me to it, lol.

I want to stress the importance of a decent PSU though. 300W is very weak and I've heard of too many Antecs literally go up in smoke and all the ones I've had have been a bit flaky, so a 300W Antec is a big no-no.

Budget for a quality 600W+ PSU at the very minimum. Look for brands like Seasonic, Corsair and Enermax, although there are other great makes out there, too.

Just drop a quad core i5 from 2xxx or 3xxx, add a SSD and you are good to go. If that's not enough get another graphics card. I am not sure what the cheap graphics card of the month is, but my guess will be 7970, GHz, or 760.

That's a surprisingly low PSU requirement for a system like this, especially with that CPU & GPU so I'm not sure I trust this table.

I'd just put an 850W or more powerful PSU in it from the likes of Seasonic and forget about potential power problems. Doing this worked very well for me with my PSU.

I would go I7-2600K with a nice P67/z68 and a 290 NON X if you could find the mobo and cpu second hand cheap.

Essentially my build. So you're not feeling spending the entire £1,000 now or changing boards?

I think that build is good overall. I would recommend getting a larger SSD than 120GB. Because as you'll only get a couple of games on that along with the OS. My Max Payne 3 Installation was over 30GB!

Also forget the PSU. I see no reason why you cant use your current one.

Corsair 520w modular is a decent PSU, the R9 280x is a midrange card so shouldn't stress it much more than your current 6850. I'd be worried if you was trying to CF or hook up Nvidia Titan.

Games won't benefit from the faster read/write/latency performance unless it's installed directly on the SSD.

The trick is with SSD, is to only install the games you are currently playing. You can only realistically fit 3-4 games on 120GB after the OS.

If you're not installing games onto the SSD save the money and don't get the SSD or get the smaller 60GB and just install the OS on it. OS will be snappier but games will be the same.

For the OS only:
Kingston 60GB SSDNow V300 SSD SATA Rev. 3.0 / 2.5 ...

I would not purchase a SSD if your motherboard does not have SATA3 ports on it. It only appears to have SATA2 from what I found out about it via Google.

Honestly, I think your system is still fairly capable. I would wait 6 more months before upgrading anything. If you have to upgrade now, get a faster CPU that fits the motherboard that you have. Faster video card would be next.

I think your power supply is just fine. I would not touch it for now. Don't worry about it "getting on". That isn't nearly the problem that some people think it is.

TBH nothing is going to improve your gaming performance more than the CPU and GPU. The Intel Core i5 3470 is as powerful of a CPU you can get, the other CPUs available are not fast enough to justify it.

The R9 280x is a huge upgrade from a 6850, more than twice as fast. The R9 290x is your only other alternative but it starts from £430. It just isn't a sensible purchase at that price. It cost 100% more for only 17% extra performance.

I think the only upgrades you're left with a more superficial, bigger SSD, more RAM, larger monitor. Nothing that will add a huge performance boost.

4.5k is a lot of money. Look into some proper investments, go travelling, deposit for a mortgage, start a company etc. There is more to life than having the latest hardware.
