Hi,
I currently have a standard sapphire 7970 & an EK block.

As I've read about that the 7970 ek block fits the 290 & the new 290x ek block fits the 290.

Makes me logically think that my current block will fit all 3, but I cant find proof of this anywhere?

The thing is im thinking about buying a 290x over the next few days & don't want to have to order a new block as well, if my current one is going to fit it fine. A lot of hassle ebaying the old block & getting bugger all back from it & forking out another £80 that is more then likely not even needed.

So has anybody here tried this already? or know if its possible?

Thanks :toast:

The 7970 block will not fit the 290. Different PCB

The 7970 block fits the 280 (same card effectively)

You should be sure that the 7970 block actually fits the 290x/290. The reference PCB's look quite different with the hardware that needs cooled in different places?

What did the 5 fingers say to the face?
:slap:

No a 7970 full cover block will not fit a 290X

exactly, the gpu is roated 23 degrees, unless your exchanger block is round, it aint gonna work.

i believe the 7970 has clearance issues with the retention mechanism that requires the surface in contact with the gpu to be raised from the rest of the assembly as well

Will just have to stop being such a tight fooker ;) & get the proper block as well

You can still be a tight ass and buy a universal GPU block, I still have one knocking around, and buy some heatsinks to slap on the hot bits (ensure a good airflow over those).

Hopefully some one at least will make a good vrm heatsink for the 290\x with those screw hole placments. Which was one of the reasons i never bothered with the the 7970.

i was under the impression there were several already out with decent VRM cooling.

air: Gelid ICY2, Arctic Accelero III,

water: Coolance VID-AR290X, EKWB,

An idea but I do like the standard EK copper blocks. They have always seemed to work well & look good.

I still have a 4890 copper paperweight sitting about somewhere lol. I guess I might get something back for the 7970 block on ebay, with it fitting the 280 also. Plus the 7970 might get me £180 ish

hybrid: Arctic Accelero Hybrid Cheap stick on heatsinks.

Not interested in water cooling how ever the GELID ICY VISION REV 2 has a screw on VRM heatsink which looks a lot like the one from AC's 2900XT cooler they did some time ago..

So depending on hot they get if the VRM's are as good as they are on cards like the reference 6970 it should be good.

I do wounder if Thermalright will do some of the much better vrm coolers that they did before.. I hope so :).

If I'm not mistaken, it didn't look like the vrms got above 90C (290 that is). Not sure if that's normal for an air cooled card, but it seemed plenty safe to me.

anything under 100 is concidered good.

but a lot of people run them up to 120.

seen a few people running the Hybrid, seems to cool the VRMS fine...the Fan is specifically for the VRMS/mem, the waterblcock is for the GPU.
