Hawaii-based Dual-GPU Graphics Card Codenamed "Vesuvius"

AMD is serious about putting two 6.2 billion-transistor "Hawaii" GPUs onto a single board, in a future dual-GPU graphics card it reportedly codenamed "Vesuvius," after the famous volcanic peak just off the coast of Naples. The card will feature two "Hawaii" GPUs with core configurations that are unknown at this point, but the source suggests it's in the maxed out "XT" configuration. AMD could, of course tinker with clock speeds, compared to the GHz-range Radeon R9 290X. We can't even imagine how AMD will handle power and thermals, given how its handling of the two on the R9 290X has been less than exemplary.

There could be a way to dissipate 450W+ with an air cooling solution, they did it with the 6990 albeit being very noisy.

There's a catch though, it's going to be one of these : noisy or expensive.

I suppose they could just partner with a waterblock manufacturer and ship this thing with a waterblock on it.

CLC could be a solution too, like ASUS did with their dual 7970.

Anyway I smell unicorns...

Well, given that the R9 290X fan is set to run at up to 47% speed per default, a dual core card would simply have to run at 94% speed per default - nothing to worry about, really!

EDIT: Yeah, they'll have to cut the über mode, since it requires 55% fan speed. Maybe they could put 1.1 fans on the dual core card, that'd easily solve that problem!

NICE energy consumption will certainly be high but we must be aware that this is a large processor and will not mind me adding 3x8 power connectors .As for cooling will require at least as good cooler as on the 7990 model. I would strongly recommend liquid cooling as it would not dropped the operating frequency as the current R9 290X. do ! My ENERMAX 1500 Platimax should be no problem feed into the two cards and if the price suited'll probably buy two. 18 micrometer technology coming in 2014 in the best case, Q3, if there will be no complications. Litle long to weit.

If AMD is smart it will just put an enhanced 3 fan cooling solution like with the 7990, and all will be good.

I'll need proof before believing this one. Not saying it's not true just that it seems really improbable. And if they do release a dual Hawaii, there will definitely be a dual GK110.

Agreed, seems everyone is trying to be cute. Truth is, r9 290x when paired with a half ass cooler is rather cool and quiet -as Tom's has proven. AMD just pushed them out with crap coolers. This card will be a beast. 3 GB ram/ GPU was perfect for the 7990, and with 4GB, this card will handle any game out there at 4k.

oh ok, amd & nv can just fire up their fab & jump to 20nm all by themselves? as if the people slapping on existing gpus & making a cooler have ANY relation to new arcitechtrue engineers that take 4 years to make a single gpu

what does amd even owe you? just to speed up some games for your entertainment?
