If serious about WCG I'd recommend an 8350 over an i5.

I asked because you could get 4cores/8threads from a xeon for the price of an i5. An overclocked 8350 would put out great ppd but with less efficiency if that matters to you. 24/7 computing ya know. I would go amd on gpu in case more gpu work comes, which we expect it too.

That sounds right. What about MoBo and GPU?

That sounds right. What about MoBo and GPU?

I use an ASUS M5A99X Evo in one of my rigs and it lets me crunch 24/7 @4.4Ghz on the 8350- have had no issues with it so far.

As far as a GPU- the 7870 is a great bang for your buck card that games fairly well and does very well with OpenCl gpu work (crunching or folding). A 7970 is much better for both but you won't be disappointed by a 7870 :)

I got a asrock 970 xtreme 4 for a killer deal of newegg. Never ran an 8350 on it but it was built for it.

I got a phenom II 4.0ghz capable and Asrock am3+ 970 Extreme 3 I could sell you for cheap, real cheap. Send me a pm?

Otherwise I'd buy a xeon 1230v2 and a h61 mobo. That would be really cheap and very fast.

Buy a 7950/760/R9-280X at a minimum.

So Intel is not advisable in crunching basically. What about GPU's? @Norton Can't I go with the newer AMD 280's? Or last Gen 7870 or 7970 will work just fine for my needs.

Anything 7870 and above will do fine- including the newer cards ;)

and it's not a case against Intel, the i7's do just fine... it's a case of budget. The FX-8's can crunch and game very well for their price (downside is they use more power)

Alright. Narrowed down to AMD 8350 and 7970 for Boxing week sale. Hope I get a sweet deal on newer cards. And I will go with Asus for mobo as @Norton mentioned but Rev 2.0
