Samsung Electronics today unveiled a new, compact storage solution, the 840 EVO mSATA solid state drive. Pictured below, this SSD makes use of 128 gigabit (Gb) 1x-nm NAND flash memory, it has a Samsung controller with TurboWrite technology, and is capable of 98,000 random read and 90,000 random write IOPS, as well as sequential read/write speeds of up to 540/520 MB/s.

The 840 EVO mSATA will be available this month globally in 120 GB, 250 GB, 500 GB and 1 TB capacities.

"With the new mSATA SSD line-up offering up to 1 TB of memory and an optimized software tool, we expect that consumers can enjoy high storage volume and performance on ultra-slim notebooks besides desktop PCs," said Unsoo Kim, senior vice president, memory brand product marketing, Samsung Electronics. "We will continue to bring leading-edge SSD products and software solutions with improved quality and reliability, while working on offering higher consumer satisfaction and strengthening competitiveness of our branded memory business."

1TB mSATA SSD? If the prices reflect similarly to the 2.5" 840 EVO drives then that sounds tasty.

I got a bad feeling these are going to be grossly over-$$$. I hope not, my 17R SE would love to eat one of these! :pimp:

Needs more M.2/NGFF. And X99 motherboards with two slots.

Too bad Samsung's XP941s are only available to integrators.

Speaking of M.2/NGFF, is it restricted to SATA 3 speeds? Looking at those benches it looks like SSDs have hit the limit.

When I bought 2 laptops few months ago, I avoided ones with NGFF for this reason. Not many are giving a damn about the NGFF.

Yeah, so far it seems as though it is still too new. Same as how USB 3 and PCI-e 3 took forever to get official support from Intel. And don't get me started on Thunderbolt.

I need tech to be adopted faster, not slower. :[

Yeah, I'd really like one of these Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD units to upgrade my aging but still reasonably fast Asus Eee Slate EP121 Core i5 Tablet PC. The OEM mSATA SSD was a 64GB Sandisk. I would really like to put in a 250GB or 500GB mSATA SSD. 1TB would be the dream but that would cost way more then the tablet is even worth.

It was about ~$1100 when it first came out but its worth about ~$550 or so now used / refurbished.
