AoE 2 explorer off still don't work. HELP!

Need Help with Age of Empires 2 Conquerors.
Yeah,i got Windows 7.And off cours the mother of all fixes is to turn off explorer to make the game colors right.
Not working for me. I had some useless microsoft windows services disabled . Figured some of thme might be the case so in all despair i turned them all on to automatic. Restarted the computer,still nothing.
I don't know what to do to make this work.
Thinking to install Windows 7 Xp Mode...maybe the game will run with XP mode....any ideas?

I had the same problems with games doing that. Earlier, stopping explorer.exe worked, but these days I can't make that work.

I ended up just making a virtual machine for them.

I installed Xp Mode. But I get an error and there is no way around it. : Gaming graphics are outside the scope of what Microsoft virtualization products are intended for. XP Mode is specifically targeted for business users who need to use programs that only run on XP. Some of the people on the product team are serious gamers, so your desire is well understand - but it's not going to happen.....
So Xp Mode to run AoE not good.

Why not just get the HD edition? Remade for 7/8, many bugs fixed, and has full steam integration.

It sounds like you are just killing Explorer to fix the colors. If so, try looking for the actually color fixer out there. You have to make a .bat file and such. It still was hit or miss for me, sometimes I'd have to keep starting it back up till it finally worked. So good luck, like said, best bet is the HD. What country are you in that people are still running 90's comps?

OK.I found the solution.
DO NOT install the microsoft screen choice update,from windows update center.
This update will mess up your colors in Age of Empires 2.
