Hey!

I'm looking at getting a 1440p monitor to replace my ancient Samsung HDTV 1920x1080 that I'm currently using as a monitor.

I've never really looked at monitors before, and I don't really know where to look. I don't entirely trust reviews on tech sites alone, so I really want peoples' opinions to point me the right direction.

Monitors aren't my specialty so please forgive my lack of knowledge :) It'll be primarily used for gaming, but I also intend to make use of the additional screen real-estate for development, too. I'd prefer a quality panel with a decent dead pixel warranty: I can't stand dead or stuck pixels...

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

upgrading monitor is nice. be prepared though to upgrade your GPU's as high res needs GPU power....

agree with james888, korean for cheap. but they are not really bad. I have korean monitor for about 6 months now (well its because its cheaper here lol)

Hey guys, thanks for the replies :)

I have a budget of around £500, I can go higher though. Is there any particular model that you would suggest?

I'm considering a GPU upgrade when the Nvidia 800-series and AMD R9 300 series are out. My main concern with my current 670s is the fact that they are only 2GB cards, which has been fine for 1080p, but I'm worried won't be sufficient for 1440p.

Your 670's will do fine at 1440p,if you are running them at stock then they are only about 10-15% slower than a 690 which does really well at 1440p.

If you are going to get a Korean monitor make sure you get one that says it is Pixel Perfect. My co-worker bought one, after he saw mine, and didn't get a pixel perfect one and there are 4 dead pixels in a clump about a 1/2" from the center of the screen. They wouldn't take it back because he didn't buy a pixel perfect monitor and it says right on the page he bought it from that it could have up to 5 dead pixels.

Actually, the difference is closer to 5%. :)

And even on supposed memory hog games like BF4 the 2GB GTX690 is still kicking ass. The 2GB memory issue is really blown out of proportion.

Yeah, that is what I'm worried about. I used to have a 1280x1024 panel with a few permanently blue pixels, used to drive me crazy... My Samsung HDTV hasn't had a single dead/stuck pixel for the nearly five years I've had it, and I've been a bit worried about getting a new monitor because of that.

So I'm leaning towards a Dell Monitor, SCAN sell the "Dell UltraSharp LED 27" Monitor IPS U2713HM", but I've heard some people had issues with it? Is it decent panel? Or is there any particular Korean brand / panel that you guys who recommend? I honestly have no idea where to begin.

Thanks again.

Keep in mind that most name brand 1440p monitors have horrible input lag, the Korean single input bypass models don't. You might get a dead pixel or two (pixel perfect is a scam btw) but at that screen size the pixels are so small that unless they are dead center (which no companies allow) or in huge groups you won't even notice. Stuck/hot pixels are a lot worse than dead...I have a couple dead pixels on mine in the upper right hand corner and you can't even see them...and I'm SUPER PICKY about pixels.

I would look at the QNIX QX2710 or the XSTAR DP2710...get the single input version (they are the same monitor) and then you can overclock if you choose (and have the GPUs to handle it). Buy the cheapest one you can find and get a SquareTrade warranty for it. That way if you end up with a problem or dead pixels you can get your money back through them. Shipping back to Korea will cost nearly as much as the monitor was so you essentially get no warranty through any seller. I bought mine from Hulustar but his communication wasn't great. Green-sum and Accessorieswhole are two of the other big Ebay sellers.

Korean for cheap. Dell for quality.

Dell is decent for the money. If you want quality you need NEC. However NEC will cost you a pretty penny. Just depends on your needs. If your just gaming than a cheapo Korean model will work. If you want more reliability then I suggest a Dell. If you want the best on the market for just about everything than look at NEC.

Quality? Not re. the panel itself which is what really matters. Non-Korean for support and warranty, if anything. That's up to you and your finances if the premium is worth it for such.

An sure NECs are quite nice; I can attest to that from the 30" we have at work. So are Eizo's etc. But I don't think he is looking for a pro-caliber graphics solution.

It's mostly just for gaming, to be honest. But I'm also planning on using game SDKs (example: the GECK for Fallout 3 / New Vegas) on it, since the extra screen space will be really useful for that.

As long as the picture quality is better than my nearly five year old Samsung SyncMaster 2333HD Telly, and doesn't have loads of dead or stuck pixels...
