When I'm playing pretty much any game for maybe about an hour or so, my computer goes into a black screen and sometimes makes a repeating sound of what was last projected on my screen. My GT 640 has had problems with overheating which is why I'm already getting myself a new card. But I just need to make sure that the card itself is the problem. Also, is it natural that my computer runs slow after a forced restart (taking the cord out of the computer then rebooting)?

clean the dust out of the cooler of the v card and if it has a cooler that is made to push the heat out the back check carefully were the fins are by the fan make sure they are not blocked up..

Best though would be to get your self some thermal paste and take the cooler off \ apart and clean and re apply paste on gpu.

Any chance of a link to the card you have ?.

All so download GPU-Z and check the temps though that program and if you click were the temps are it will tell you max temps.

And as seen as your planing to get a new gpu too make sure you have the PSU to handle it..

And dont forget to fill in your system specs sop people can help more too

You can see my specs now, but the GTX 650 Ti isn't in my comp yet, that's going to be an upgrade coming very soon. But the GT 640 I currently have has overheating problems, so yeah. But I want to know for sure that this is the problem.

Can you confirm you tried any of these

1. Cleaned the cooler with compressed air ?
2. taken the cooler off \ apart to remove dust ?
3. If you removed the cooler applied new thermal paste ?
4. clean the computer for dust build up like cpu cooler the front and rear of the case ?.
5. Tried using the computer without it's side\cover on so the GPU can breath better ?.
6. Checked with GPU-Z whot your temps actually are ?.

BTW never run a computer even more so a gaming computer on a Generic PSU.. And by the sound of that case there be little air flow too which would make issue's over time..

If you have not cleaned the dust out of the system you may want to do it in the backyard with some compressed air.

Yes

Yes (goes up to 98c depending on the game, but crashes on all games)
I'm getting a new CX430m PSU so there's no worry about that :D

Well try taking the side off to lot the v card breath some.. I my self never been to fond pre-made computers and the cases they come for as they seem to always have bad ventilation even more so after time as what air that can be sucked in though the gaps tend to get blocked over time pretty fast..

So take the side of and see if it improves the temps enough maybe attach a fan to the 12v molex cooling were the video card is.

Does it have a cooler like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130802 If so were the fan is to the left there is the heatsink fins were a bunch of dust typically builds up so get a little torch and have a look see if the area is clear.

As for the PSU i know i would not trust a CWT made psu and there has to be a reason for the shitty warranty of the unit.

If it is confirmed as overheating, yes. It seems rather obvious. After an hour of gaming the GPU overheats enough to shut it down. That is what's happening.

does the fan not go to 100%? whenever heating is concerned, you should try max fan, usually default ramps dont go that far unless it's really dusty

Video card is overheating and attempting to "save" itself.

I max the fan using MSI Afterburner, but still, it maxes itself out, then ramps up the temps.

This started happening maybe a week ago. I noticed my game was lagging and the bottom of my computer was hot as hell, but the cpu fan was cool. Used GPU-Z to check and I saw my temps going high as hell xD! This only happens at max clock, but this GPU is crap and reaches max clock easily.

Well I think when you suspected the GPU was poop, you were right. You can try updating the driver for it but I doubt that will do much good. Seeing as how you have cleaned it and whatnot with no gains, I would say it may just be ready to die haha. Put it out of its misery ;)

When I saw that last line, I thought in my head smashing my graphics card while listening to Linkin Park-Given Up on the part where Chester was singing "Put me out of my misery!" xD! But I'm getting GTX 650 Ti so there shouldn't be a problem anymore.

It'll run everything as a 2gb card right?

What is your definition of "everything"?

With a 1GB card (On a laptop mind you) I can run MWF3, Battlefield 3, WoW, Need for Speed Most Wanted, etc. I know none of those are like Crysis or anything but it gives you an idea. You should have no problems.

650 should run a lot of games fine on medium settings I really would not push any higher than that. the overheating issues with the 640 could be attributed to settings if you turn them down to low or minimum does it still over heat and shut down? I would also recommend getting speedfan and setting up a custom fan profile to ramp up your fan according to temps as well instead of maxing out fan first and listening to a turbine whine what kind of games are you are playing and your vid settings?

I would push it past medium. I use to have a 1GB Zotac that was a few years old and could play most games on MAX. I am sure this card could do the same or at least on high for some games.

Well I'm usually playing low spec MMOs like S4 league and shooters like Counter Strike and such. The game I play the most is C9 (Continent of 9th Seal). A really fun action MMO, I play that crap on the lowest settings and i still lag.

I would think this card would cover those things just fine.

EDIT: I use to play C9 quite a bit. ;) Never played S4
