Hello everyone,

as my secondary seven year old desktop machine, which I used to have problems with back when it was brand new* ; some time later a HDD weardown**, has become too slow for pretty much everything, so I am looking forward to replace it. I've based this build on one made for a similar purpose in 2012.

CPU: Intel i5 4670K (the difference is around 10USD VS i5 3570K)
MOBO: MSI Z87M-G43
RAM: Kingston HyperX 2x4GB 1600MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 DIMM XMP HyperX Red Series
Case: THERMALTAKE COMMANDER MS-I BLACK USB3.0
PSU: Corsair 430W Builder Series™ CX430 V2
HDD: [inherited] (not the one that wore down)
Optical drive: [inherited]

The main question I have with this build, as it should have absolutely no compatibility issues per se, is:
Should I replace 4670K with 4670 (and Z87 with H87), as I am not going to use SLI/Xfire and it is highly doubtful I'm going to ever decide to overclock?

* – 2 equivalent motherboard replaces and then a third of a different brand, which finally worked, all during the first year after purchase
** – at first, I thought it was just some bad sectors, while actually bad sectors kept appearing every following day – full scan/format, clean reinstall = corrupted (unbootable) OS in the next morning

the non K chips can overclock slightly on a Z series motherboard (usually about 4 notches higher on the multiplier) - so get a Z board and a non K chip for mild OC'ing much like i've got with my PC (non OCing parts, still got 600Mhz more on stock cooling)

mmaybe get cheaper DDR3 1333Mhz ram, you wont notice any speed difference unless you're doing video encoding or benchmarking. as long as what you get is 1.5v for greater compatibility you'll be fine.

do you consider an i3 4130 since no gaming?

Xeon 1230v2 is a nice chip, 3.5ghz can be had with a z77 motherboard. ECC memory can be done on an 1155 workstation motherboard. Price is about $190 at microcenter. They are very cheap on ebay. It performs about the same as an i7 2600. 4 cores 8 threads ivy bridge 3.3 ghz with 3.7 turbo. Poor mans i7 3770. It has no onboard video. A 7770 might be a good option for $100.

K series chips don't support VT-D which makes virtual machines less optimal since you can't use your pci-e hardware as I understand it. I know I couldnt get my GPU to work in a windows 7 pro's xp vm last night when I played with it, just generic display.

This computer needs to be performant as it will be running analysis software dependent on raw CPU power (namely, NOT *coin mining). Which means while in the last decade 2 cores would have been enough (moreso with HT, which eases context switching), it is just not acceptable today. Additionally 3.8 GHz (upclocked during peak load) > 3.4 GHz.

The computer is intended to run native applications / dual boot as necessary.
