I have a HIS 7950 iceQ Turbo without Boost (newest BIOS without EFI I think). I used your program to fix the clock at 1000 MHz with 1.11 volts for stability (ASIC 65%, gpu is at 1.10 volts). I let the memory untouched, it can hardly get past 1300 MHz. I think 1050 / 1300 MHz would be possible easily. I also upped the TDP to 170 watts (standard 142).
I will upload my BIOS if somebody needs a good non boost non EFI HIS-BIOS. The one with the "1" is modified.

Thank you very much for your program, darkhmz!

hi, I have 2 of the 7950 Iceq, they are great cards, nice to have the heat exhausting out of the case, especially with crossfire. I managed to push mine to 1180, but they took a lot of juice, so not worth it. I found the best compromise is to aim for 1v or 1.1v max to keep nice temps, low fan speed and power consumption, when pushing the cards 100%.

What memory have you got? When I took off the cooler (easy) to clean it, I had Hynix, which will o/c to 1600 (6400) easily. I'm currently running 850MHz as we're having some 40C+ days hear in Melbourne and pumping 500-600W of heat into the bedroom is not good!

Hi,
I have Powercolor R9 270 and I want to be able to control the voltage with afterburner.
Has anyone experimented with this card? If so can you guide me please?

Thanks
Iru

Hi, what model you have? AXR9 270 2GBD5-TDHE/OC or AXR9 270 2GBD5-DH/OC? I have AXR9 270X 2GBD5-PPDHE and have same problem.
Hey guys! Someone changed the voltage on the video cards series r9 270x?

Hi,
I've tried flashing my MSI R9 280X Gaming 3G card bios. It worked once with no errors. But now when I try to flash the original bios file (1.ROM) it gives me this error:
ROM not erased
Error 0FL01 - press 1 to continue
The flashing of the BIOS was all done on position 2. Position 1 still works fine. But I want to fix position 2 bios. I'm using Xubuntu with a bootable DOS disk and atiflash.

Commands I've used:
atiflash -s 1 1.rom (save original bios file)
Then I ran VBE7.0.0.7b and undervolt #6 and #0 to VDDC = 1181
atiflash -f -p 1 1_new.rom

I've posted the original and modified BIOS files for reference.

Any ideas on what might be causing this?

Hi, maybe you already solved your problem, but I was facing the same situation today, and just maybe somebody else might need some help here too!

It has something to do with the bios number 1 (which you saved) being a double uefi/legacy bios...vbe7 program reads it and perhaps inteprets it wrongly, vbe7 then somehow corrupts it in the save process, and makes it unusable for the MSI r9 280x... :(

- however download the official and updated bios from the link here: http://rumorscity.com/2013/12/12/msi-r9-280x-bios-update-to-fix-overheating-and-vrm-temperatures/
-flash that and you are good to go again..
-also if you still have problems with the flashing, try changing the pci-express slot and flash again!

hope this helps!

Greetings Folks,

I just want to thank the developer for this beautiful tool and give some review:

I got me an used XFX HD 7950 Double Dissipation (std clock 900 / 1250) for less than 220€.
As always I just wanted to see how far I could go in OC that brick and I was not amused about its potential.

First, I got me some new Cooling ( http://www.alpenfoehn.de/index.php/uebersicht-vga-kuehler/14-vga-kuehler/21-peter )
because that crappy XFX cooler become louder every time I got in some serious BF4 fights.
I really managed to get 18°C less in battlemode without any noise comin out of my case ,
so I was hoping to get some more performance from it.

With its Voltagecore locked there was no way to get over 1150/1375 so I looked for that got damn TDP managment ,
and before I managed to overwrite that BIOS on my own I found this tool. Thanks again at this point :)

What I did so far:

I just changed that TDP value from 188 W to 240 W (Pw Limit automatically adjusted)
and fixxed my clocks up to 1000 / 1350 Standart.
Also I set the TDP Limit up to 50%.

With MSI Kombustor :
Default (1000 / 1350 TDP 0% ) : 62 FPS ... Max heat 57°C
(1000 / 1350 TDP 10% ): 62 FPS ... Max heat 58°C (^^)
(1000 / 1350 TDP 30%) : 72 FPS ...
(1000 / 1350 TDP 40%) : 109 FPS ... Max heat 76°C
(1000 / 1350 TDP 50%) : 122 FPS ... Max heat 80+ °C

I also tried std clock using same TDP the FPS was just dropping by 2 frames .
So again, many thanks to the developer, that tool raised my cards value a lot.

I would go for 900 / 1500 MHz in your case. I recently tested my memory again. I discovered it was Elpida 1500 MHz memory (6 GBps, EDW2032BBBG) the whole time. The tested game showed some flickering in the past, but maybe it was an other problem. Metro LL now runs just fine with 1050 / 1500 MHz! It crashes at 1550 MHz, but 1500 MHz are fast enough. I think i will flash it with 1000 / 1450 MHz with TDP 185W (instead of 142) because of heat and performance per Watt.

Greetings from Germany (excuse me for my english please)

inside my haf-x, bought for gaming first, then when i discovered the whole world about mining, i entered in that world

temp is 71 and fan 42%, but there is another card near it(7950 vapor-x), watt consumption i dunno i don't have a wattmeter now, but i read that at 1100mv they consume about 265...

cgminer string is simple, -g2 --thread-concurrency 8192 and -I 13

Sorry for having overlooked this for such a long time.

Thanks for your answer.

I too have a MSI R9 280X Gaming 3G card. Actually 4 of the blasted things.

I had a similar issue where I wasn't able to restore the backup rom I took with "atiflash -s 0 0.orig.rom" . Under Linux when I tried restoring using "atiflash -f -p 0 0.orig.rom" (atiflash 4.07). It kept displaying the following error message:

programmed = 0, romsize = 40000
ROM not erased

ERROR: 0FL01

I used Rufus v1.4.1 to make a bootable FreeDOS USB stick and copied atiflash version 4.17 for DOS, along with my backup rom images to a folder on the USB stick. Rebooted into dos, flipped the BIOS switch to position 2 and flashed using "atiflash -f -p 0 0.orig.rom"

Rufus - http://rufus.akeo.ie/downloads/
ATIflash 4.17 for DOS - http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/2306/atiflash-4-17/

now "atiflash -ai" shows the correct information and the old BIOS is restored.

PS: I'm not impressed with the fans on my MSI R9 280X Gaming 3G cards. 3 weeks in and one fan has died. I need to finger start it and then it only runs for 30 seconds. And Yes I've even tried just the one card to isolate any potential PSU power issues. Another card's fan looks like it might be going soon to.

Wow, thanks so much for posting this I changed from atiflash 4.07 to 4.17 and unbricked my card.
I wonder if I should try to reflash to the updated bios to try to undervolt again or count my lucky stars I got the gpu working again and just deal with 300w/card draw?

Is VBE7.0.0.7b safe to play with a Dell 7970m VBIOS? I see 99% here are desktop users...

I have some problems with my 7970m: random black screen freeze (with sound in loop) with some games...
With GPU-z I've seen high 3D settings uses 850/1200@1.050V but opening the VBIOS file with VBE7 (VRM unknown, mem Hynix H5GQ2H24MFR) I see 850/1200@1.075V and TDP(W):84 (shouldn't be ~100W this card?):

Is this normal (0,0,0 Overdrive?)

Do you think setting 850/1200@1.025V and Power Limit (W): 56-90 might fix random black screens freezes? Maybe TDP(W):84 at default is too low and because of not enough power shuts down with a black screen?

Gaming laptop MSI GX660 + AMD 7970m + Win7 x64.

EDIT:
I can confirm VBE7 (VBE7.0.0.7b) works fine with Dell 7970m [VBIOS 015.017.000.001.042717 (113-C42904A1-117)]. Successfully undervolted from 850/1200@1.050 (83°C without turbofun) to 900/1500@1.000 (75°C without turbofun), and set Power Limit (W): 56-84 to 56-94! :)

Hope this edited vbios will solve also random black screen frezes with sound in loop...

EDIT2:
It looks so! No more random black screen freezes since I edited the vbios some days ago! :D

Can anyone confirm that this does work on the MSI 280x gaming cards? I had person say that it did not change the voltage even after flash. I would like to know so I can buy a bunch of these cards if it does work. Also what voltage did you use.

When loading an original BIOS:

UEFI image detected!
Modifications only affect the legacy BIOS, UEFI part will be disabled.

What do I do?
What does it mean?
What effects does this have?

It's an R9 280x
(MSI R9 280X GAMING 3G (series 057))

Hey guys! Someone changed the voltage on the video cards series r9 270x?

I have powercolor R9 270. MSI Afterburner does not allow to change any voltage. But i tried Trixx and it seems to allow to change the voltage but i cannot see any changes in CGIWatcher or CGMiner. May be it not doing anything.

So i am still trying to find out about how to under-volt it.

I have some giga 7990's and I'm having difficulty modifying the voltage. I saved two rom files for each card using atiflash v 4.17 but when I open it up in vbe7 and try to modify the voltage in the power play tab I can only put in a 3 digit number although even though there are 4 digits in the field to begin with. I tried modifying he bios on another windows 7 machine and got the same issue. Unfortunately I cannot use gpuz as I'm running linux. Any ideas?

Well it turns out VBE7 can only edit bios saved from GPUZ. So you must install windows to edit bios, good news it works quite well, I down volted my locked gigas 7990 to 1.08 and they are running almost 10degrees cooler at full power with same hash rates.

I used atiflash version 4.17 and vbe was unable to parse the file correctly, i will try with 3.99 however you would think the latest version would have greater compatibility.

I agree:toast:; however changes where made to version 4.07 & 4.17 [Exact changes unknown]
[used atiflash version 3.99 and VBE7.0.0.7b; checked this with HD 7990 using the XT2 GPU architecture.]

I used Trixx too, but i think it is don't work.

I think I am having similar problems with MSI R9 270X. The files from Atiflash(4.17) are 262K but when altering them in VBE7 they get saved as 131K. If I flash back a modded file the system crashes on booting up (Debian). I can restore it by flashing back a file from VBE7 with the original settings - this makes it work again - but of course I am still not undervolting. This is all done with switch in position 2. Have already killed 3 power supplies (Powercool - the 850w one went bang only after 10 minutes - measured drawing 650watts) so would really like to get to bottom of this. Using VBE7.0.0.7b as well.

I was trying to change Subvendor ID using VBE and it does not work as it should.
GPU-Z still shows original ID after modification.
Does anyone know why this does happen?
Hex values are changed, bios decoding tools read new ID, but after flashing the card with modified ROM GPU-Z reads original ones.
