Hi all,

I am upgrading my existing rig to include an i7 4770k(oc), 2x4Gb DDR3, 1x GTX660 2Gb and a corsair H60 cooler. I would like to know if you think my current 450W PSU will be sufficient for this, otherwise I will have to prioritise the PSU over the water cooling and over clock at a later date?

Thanks

I would have to say not a chance.

If I was you I would go for a quality PSU from Corsair or seasonic in the 500-600watt range.

The 4770k should draw less power than your current C2Q so it should be okay for the short term. That's a pretty junk PSU though. You should upgrade soon to a quality unit that is 450+ watts, especially if you plan to OC.

Thanks for the feedback, I know what you mean this is my concern I could probably do without the OC for a bit seeing as the performance increase will be huge anyway. In this case do you think my current xilence CPU cooler will suffice for the i7 in turbo frequencies until I can afford a better cooler. I have read and my new Z87-G45 should support the socket 775 cooler?

I'm not sure on the cooler, it should be ok to begin with though I expect, you can always change it at a later date I guess.

Sure. It'll be better than the stock intel cooler, so it will have no problem at stock clocks.

Isn't there the whole Haswell sleep state PSU compatibility issue to deal with, too? I haven't read into it since I have no interested in moving to the 4770K, but an older off brand PSU might not be compatible regardless of the wattage it can deliver.

I'm pretty sure older PSU's still work, the chip just can't enable the new sleep states.

less you want to burn up that new hardware- id really suggest atleast a 620 Watt from a tested and known brand- johnny guru is a site for such reviews.

Jeantech- not a chance.

I cant recommend OCZ either-

Wow thanks Tigger, a Corsair 750 for an extra £10, there is no real doubt there! have a few weeks to wait, but I will be looking forward to upgrading. It will essentially be a new build now and as I am getting the PSU and will also leave my Q9400 M-ATX machine functional. :nutkick:

A good quality 450W would be sufficient, but what you have now simply does not qualify as such.

If you're looking for quiet operation and high efficiency, these are fine solutions:
FD Tesla R2 500W (ATNG-made, good quality)
BQT Straight Power E9 450W (FSP-made, solid quality, all but inaudible)

If, however, you're not obsessed with silence nor efficiency, these are fantastic value, and great quality (Seasonic-made):
XFX Core 550W (Older group-reg design, but great build quality and solid performance)
XFX Pro 650W (New Seasonic M12 DC-DC platform, excellent build quality and performance)

Any of these above will do nicely. Probably the best value for money lies with the 650W XFX, though.

If you can go with a high cost/benefit 80 plus gold/platinum psu, go with it(with the ones like some superflower series project). A 500W PSU is more than sufficient and very recommended to your config, even a Antec EA-380D can supply your PC power needs(but it's not recommended once your max load will use close to max capacity of this PSU).

400 for that is low. I would get at least 500w but really 600w to 750w would be better. A 400w PSU is going to really struggle.

a good quality brand PSU between 450 and 550w should be fine 600 to 750w would be overkill, i had ran a setup with a Xeon E3-1275V2 and a R9 270 on a 380w Antec earthwatt 80+ (plain 80+) with no issue at all (but real close to the PSU max load) a 4770K non OC is a bit higher in power consumption than the Xeon i had but the 660 need a bit less than my r9 270

with what you give assuming 3 120mm standard case fan
Minimum PSU Wattage:355 W
Recommended

i get that ... but as said a jeantech is not what we can call a good quality brand PSU

mildly overclocked to 4ghz (stock voltage should suffice)
Minimum PSU Wattage:363 W

so a 550 should be safe side even if adding a 2nd 660 later

750w psu is way overkill. my 750w psu can even handle 4770k oced to 4.4 with mild oc on crossfire 290's... a quality 500w should be very sufficient even gtx 660 and 4770k is oc'd.

Glad to see this post is still alive, thought I would update that this build is finished now, I went for:

Corsair GS700w bronze
4770k @ 4.5ghz (1.3vcore, think I got a bad chip...)
8Gb Corsair Vengance 2133mhz
MSI G45 mobo
H100i aio watercooler.
GTX660oc

I figured the 700w power supply would leave room for SLI at some point. Worked out as quite a good gaming rig for a mid range budget.

Thanks for your help.

even 550w is enough for SLI manufacturer tend to exaggerate the requirement for the safety but they over exaggerate most of the time ...

4.5ghz is enough at 1.3vcore ... why people are obsessed with 5ghz 24/7 :D

Minimum PSU Wattage:467 W
Recommended
PSU Wattage:
*517 W
is for a SLI of 660 ...

so 550 to 650 w should have been enough

not to self: if OC to 4.6 (under air ... Katana 4) and 2 R9 270 my 530w will not be enough ... hum ... not sure even if the recommended would be 550w it still should be able to hold it xD

700w give you room for a SLI of 770/780 or R9 290 :D future proof indeed
