The R9 290s Windforce cards have a manufacturing fault. The R9 290Xs are fine. The temps on balanced(VRM and core are both good) and they use over rated Elpida memory so the memory clocks OK.
The Sapphires have higher VRM temps because the coils aren't properly cooled but the core temp is lowest. I have no idea on memory some hynix some Elpida.
The ASUS cards are have the worst temps and the VRM is questionable since it only has 1 phase more than reference but all the components might be cheaper making it worse.
So the best cards are the Gigabytes but there you have to buy the R9 290X or wait for the new revision of the R9 290 to start selling.
Waiting for Toxics and ROGs is pointless because you'll hit cooling limits way too early to notice VRM limitations.
So, that means for 290X, either Gigabyte or SAPPHIRE. What about Nvidia that I asked? And I didn't understand the statement about Toxic and ROG.

I don't like Nvidia because of bad VRM design, GPU Boost, locked voltage, lower power limits and questionable benchmark performance caused by boost.
When I said waiting for ROG/Toxic/Lightning is pointless I said it because they are all built with massive VRMs(400A+) which is unnecessary when AMD already delivers(350A) on that front. You'd be paying a 50$+ premium for a purely theoretical OC range increase because you can still lose the silicon lottery and your over sized VRM is useless unless you plan to bench on LN2.

So, that means, now, even if those Toxic, ROG or Lightning come, we should still go for the Tri-X, DC2OC, WINDFORCE and Gaming, right? Anyway, does that 50A put any difference on game performance? What about that massive OC? Are you telling those massive OC are worthless for 290X?

I heard AMD's Vesuvias is coming. Should I wait for that or go for 290X CFX?

Benchmark Scores bench...mark? i do leave mark on bench sometime, to remember which one is the most comfortable. :o
Go for the R9 280X, it's the best card in that budget.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127759
This is more than enough.
overpriced due to cryptocurrency mining... heck before the R9 lauch i could find 7970ghz for under 300chf in 2nd hand .... now they ask between 350 and 450... and the 7950 too have seen the price go boom ... (280/280X depending the retailer where i am are near 50 to 100chf above recommended price...)

otherwise if we put aside this : the 280X is a good "bang for bucks card"
wait wait wait .... 519$ for a 280X... aherm ... nope no "bang for bucks" it's almost the price of the cheapest R9-290 at my favorit retailer and 200chf above the price of a GTX770 (which is the 280X counterpart)

Those out of the box OCs are proven average(except TOXIC cards and some of those had artifacts at factory OC speeds) OCs and since OCing your card won't usually(never here) void your warranty you can buy a regular card and OC it your self. The only reason to buy a Lightning/Matrix/Toxic is if you OC competitively(there those 10 to 50mhz more can make a major difference) or you use LN2.
