If you want to keep your current i7 then your budget will get a relief for your graphic card upgrade. You do look frustrated with that board and you should be but what about your system usage I mean gaming or what? Dont underestimate your cpu. Not to mention price difference between z87 and x58 boards. Gaming is a complicated subject and performance boost is going to come from both cpu and gpu. Also tell about your display if you want to play games and one or two games too. Your favourite ones. Please scratch hard even if your'e impatient and quickly want to get a new fine running system because you know its gonna be matter of years of use.
I can't find a x58 board that is good and isn't as pricey as a z87 board, they all seem to be the same price. I do play lots of lots of games as well as rendering usage through Maya, video editing, photoshop work etc. Even more now than ever. I did OC my CPU and it turned out great but it seems like my motherboard just sort of gave up. As for a GPU, I got the 6970 for free and it wont work I feel better spending 400 on a cpu mobo combo than I do on a graphics card.....sometimes I don't even want to spend the money at all, as a matter of fact I still don't but IT feels like it may be the only way to just get rid of it and maybe sell the i7 920, otherwise I am out of options. I can sit here and try to fix it and fix it and fix it but it just does not want to cooperate with me. Hell I had a q6600 build that was just like this too.

Thats not solid reason to buy a motherboard. What exactly your budget is for motherboard? I have i7 4770k with msi z87mpower. Use it for chess analysis havnt overclocked it yet but I sense you wouldnt go ASUS because of previous experience with p6 despite you know it wasnt motherboard fault. What about that card now?
why are you bashing him? hes getting a good motherboard, and a good upgrade in the process. dont be such a dick. and the one he picked, i would trust more than the mpower.

How is your ethernet cable doing? The difference between core i7 920 and 3770k is massive in performance grunts even at stock. Let alone be the overclocked i7 4770k. But the time you mention overclocking concept of cpu cooling pops which is another story.Just wanna ask you again about your resolution and display. Are you thinking about using i7 4770k with integrated graphics. Did you mean 400$? for motherboard and cpu.

Yeah I was going to get a motherboard and CPU combo and I wasnt going to use integrated graphics as I still have a 5870. I tried many different cables still nothing.

I didnt say get mpower and of course its a good upgrade I was just saying that dont get gigabyte because you never had a problem with it. I want him to look more. A system should be balanced cpu, gpu, ram, power, casing and of course display size and relative resolution in case of gaming.I dont want him to stick with x58 but I also want him to save from i7 4770k and put in graphic card. He also seems to be shy of telling about his display. Still! If you think I was bashing him then I'm sorry! Your eye sees more looking at your experience typicalintrovert!

1920x1080 and a second monitor that I use for work 1680 x1050, and youre wrong Ive done quite a bit of research regarding what I should buy in terms of motherboards cpu's etc to benefit my needs. I liked the price of the gigabyte board and judging from the reviews I haven't heard anything bad about the board other than ,"oh not enough features" etc etc when I read the reviews sounds like it overclocks well, sounds like even at stock it performs well, and for 139.99 as opposed to a lot higher of the other boards I thought this felt like a steal. I have gone through many reviews sites and videos and I just came down to this one. My original plan was to go for an AMD build but since it draws a lot of power HOWEVER it kills in the apps I will be using (especially maya I bet) I left it to the games and over all value and it doesnt matter for gaming because honestly I wont notice a 5-10 fps difference but it also overall gets hotter, so thats a no go. what stopped me from intel was the price. Microcenter apparently has a great deal than new egg and I saw the FX 9370 for pretty much the same price (249.99) as the i7 4770k on microcenter then I instantly said well screw that I am going with intel again especially if it's at this price.

The ethernet port is apparently fried so theres that, although it is 10-20 bucks for a ethernet card the time I've had one in past builds it just didn't cooperate...again...so I dont even know anymore

Now we are talking! 1920x1080. I think paired with i7 4770k your 5870 will suffer no performance bottlenecks even with latest DirectX11 titles as for video editing i7 4770k will elicit a smile on your face sometime with its blistering pace. You also need a different memory now.In case of gaming something round about 1866mhz 8gb will serve more than enough and Good Luck ! with prices fluctuation.

the gigabyte boards especially the UP and UD series have quite the track record of being much better built than other competitor's boards at varying price ranges, so OP made a good pick. also, OP's 5870 might sag in the latest titles even if it is at 1080p. the 5870, when it was new, traded blows with the gtx 470, and was beaten by the 480. now as we know niether the 470 or 480 are able to manage the heavier titles at maxed. so if OP wants a do-all card, the 5870 is not the answer anymore.

The boards digitalarts linked are viable options, but if you want the best one for your money, gigabyte is pretty much unbeatable. when the UP5 was new last year, it was reported in a [H] review that it was able to reach higher levels of frequency at much lower voltage over the Maximus V, and also higher build quality levels, which is quite the achievement seeing as it is a considerably cheaper board

sorry, digitalarts. no offense intended :toast:

short addenum: Giga's mainstream chipset boards are awesome. however their X79 boards were all garbage and a giant dissapointment. I had to go to an Asus P9X79 WS for my 3930K build instead of a X79 UP5 which was a bummer.

None taken! Its an honour to share knowledge and learn from others.Everybody once knew nothing. 5870 served well when 5000 series came but then you know games were different and many top of the line titles were in DirectX10. I cant see 5870 benchmarks nowadays in latest titles obviously latest graphic cards are benchmarked oftenly, on all websites. But I think even 1920x1080 processor is the dominant contributor in gaming. Of course this theory wont servive in case of Battlefield 4 but how can how I tell no benchmark data I find for 5870 as mentioned before. Link me something if you find. Otherwise he can go crossfire which is not bad at all!

Radeon R9 280X (7950) tested against Radeon 5870 @ 1920x1080 Maxed. 5870 keeps up much better than expected, but results are still :/

You guys are awesome and I love the help that Im getting. I just got in the new PC and I am loving it so far. Didn't know it could run so fast it's crazy. Thanks again and I have read that comparison before I agree it's still meh but I am hoping to get enough for at least a 670, or 760 something.

skip the nvidia 6 series. i had a 680, it was such a waste of money. my trisli 480s were more powerful, and the 7950 I had was just as good for less money. 760 is a good bang for buck card. i def know the feeling that youre experiencing..first time i truly felt that was going from a GTS 250 to a GTX 470 back when they were brand new, and watching it destroy all the games the 250 had trouble with.
